Mustangs, Mounties battle to overtime tie
Smoky Mountain and Tuscola battled to a 3-3 overtime tie in a non-conference soccer game last Thursday at Waynesville.
Grant Schallock scored all three goals for the Mustangs (4-2-1).
SM had a chance to win in regulation but missed a penalty kick after a foul in the box with 10 seconds left in regulation.
“This game answered a number of questions I had about our fitness,” Coach Dolphus Brown said. “We played three nights in a row and went into overtime, and we were aggressive to the very end. We took some big strides.”
Schallock opened the scoring at the 11-minute mark.
“The ball was played in front of the net,” Brown said. “Their goalkeeper fumbled the ball. Grant just stepped around the keeper and knocked it in.”
The Mountaineers tied it 1-1 at the 18-minute mark when John Hickman kicked the ball in from 18 yards out at the top of the box.
Schallock put the Mustangs up 2-1 at the 34-minute mark with an assist from Joey Cox.
“The ball was played by Joey from the right side about 25 yards out,” Brown said. “Grant got it from 13 yards away and shot to the near post.”
Tuscola tied it 2-2 on Richard Maloy’s goal with just 20 seconds left in the half.
“He beat one of our guys and took a shot from 12 yards out on the left side,” Brown said.
SM regained the lead, 3-2, at the 56-minute mark on Schallock’s final goal with Martin Davis providing the assist.
“Martin came out of the midfield with the ball,” the coach said. “Grant beat a defender and shot from 16 yards.”
Tuscola tied it 3-3 with six minutes remaining as Brad Caldwell knocked in a free kick from 20 yards away.
“We had some opportunities in overtime, but we just didn’t cash in,” Brown said.
The Mustang JVs are 2-2 after a 3-2 win. John Brown scored twice, including the game-winner with two minutes left. Noah Gallinger assisted on that goal and also scored.
Jeremy Cauley played well in his first game as goalkeeper, according to Coach Stephan Delor.
