Enrollment is up at most county schools
By Derek Hodges
Jackson County Public Schools have reported an increase of nearly 100 students over last year’s enrollment.
The figures, based on 10-day enrollment numbers, show 3,705 students at seven county schools, up from 3,607 last year.
All but two schools, Smokey Mountain Elementary and Scotts Creek, saw increases.
Fairview had the largest population jump, with 46 new students, going from 749 in 2004-05 to 795 this year. Second was Cullowhee Valley, which posted a gain of 25 students, taking it from 597 to 622.
The School of Alternatives also saw an increase in the 20s, with 22 more students than last year, bringing the school to an even 100. Blue Ridge School also experienced double-digit growth, with 17 more students to make a total of 274.
Only Smoky Mountain High experienced a single-digit increase, gaining only two students to bring their total to 994.
Smokey Mountain Elementary, however, has three fewer students than at the same time last year, for a total of 418. Scotts Creek saw the largest drop, with 11 fewer students enrolled. The school has a total attendance of 502 this year.
Superintendent Sue Natios credited the increase to recent growth in the county.
