Cody Webb paces Bulldogs to 40-16 win over Mustangs
Murphy’s ground game rolled up 432 yards and six touchdowns Friday as the Bulldogs breezed to a 40-16 victory over Smoky Mountain at Murphy.
Cody Webb rambled for 236 yards and three TDs in 18 carries. Elie Sutton added 99 yards in 16 attempts while Josh Sullivan scored three times and gained 67 yards in seven carries.
The Bulldogs were so dominant on the ground that they did not throw a pass in the second half.

Cory Siler paced the offense for the Mustangs with 116 yards in 20 carries. He also threw a TD pass.
Sullivan intercepted Tyson Crawford’s pass at midfield on the game’s first possession. Murphy needed just four plays to score as Sutton ran for 16 yards and Cort McKeon threw a 17-yard pass to Sullivan in the flat. Sullivan ran around left end 17 yards to the end zone. Brian Laney missed the extra point leaving the score 6-0 with 10:05 to go in the first quarter.
The Mustangs moved the ball well on their next possession as they did most of the night. Siler had runs of 10 and 20 yards and caught a 13-yard pass from Crawford, but the drive ended on downs at the 19.
After an exchange of punts, the Bulldogs marched 82 yards in eight plays. The highlight was a 50-yard run by Webb, who also had a 12-yard gain and scored from a yard out. A conversion pass failed keeping the margin 12-0 with 11:08 to play in the half.

SM moved from its 18 to the Murphy 9 in 14 plays after the kickoff. Matt Hawkins caught a 14-yard pass from Crawford, and Siler gained 10 yards. Crawford completed a 12-yard pass to Josh Jones on fourth-and-6 from the 19. When the drive stalled, Grant Schallock kicked a 25-yard field goal cutting the gap to 12-3 with 5:25 left in the half.
Sullivan picked up 11 yards on the first play after the kickoff. Moments later, Webb ripped off a 60-yard TD run. McKeon passed to Curtis Huss for the conversion and a 20-3 lead at the 3:08 mark.
The Bulldogs marched 69 yards in 12 plays following the second half kickoff. Keys were McKeon’s 14-yard run and an 11-yard gain by Sutton. Sullivan swept around the left side for 14 yards and a TD. Laney’s PAT made it 27-3 with 5:27 to play in the third stanza.
The Mustangs answered by driving 59 yards in 10 plays. Crawford gained 15 yards and scrambled for 10 on fourth-and-6 from the 21. He kept off the right side for 8 yards and a score. Schallock’s PAT narrowed the deficit to 27-10 with 54.6 seconds to go in the third period.
Webb’s 47-yard run sparked an 86-yard TD drive in eight plays. Webb scored from the 6, but Laney missed the point after leaving Murphy in front 33-10 with 9:19 to play in the game.
SM responded with a 62-yard drive in five plays. Dillon Dunford went for 24 yards on a reverse, and Siler threw a 23-yard tailback pass to Hawkins for a TD. A conversion run failed for a 33-16 margin with 6:57 on the clock.
Sullivan’s 20-yard run and Laney’s PAT concluded the scoring at the 2:43 mark. The 50-yard drive took six plays, including Sutton’s 10-yard run.
