Sylva residents deliver relief goods

090805hurricanrelief
Sylva resident Margaret Hamilton, fourth from left, was scheduled to arrive in Gulfport, Miss., Wednesday (Sept. 6) with a load of supplies donated through a relief drive held this past weekend. “We had a great response,” she said. “We have a 26-foot U-Haul truck that’s actually overloaded. Most of our weight is bottled water, but we also have a tremendous amount of baby supplies, and I think we bought out Wal-Mart’s entire supply of peanut butter.” Along with supplies, volunteers collected approximately $2,300 in cash and a $1,000 Wal-Mart gift certificate in the weekend-long effort held at Wal-Mart, Ingles, and the Food Lion stores in Sylva and Cherokee. Hamilton and her son Austin were joined by Smoky Mountain High School teachers Victoria McDonald and John Douthit for the drive to Mississippi, where the group will distribute supplies and volunteer at a soup kitchen through the weekend. Assisting Hamilton in receiving donations at Wal Mart’s parking lot Saturday are, from left, Cindi Magill, Alison Johanson, Austin Hamilton, Courtney Spaulding, Hannah Painter, Laura Spaulding, Chase Bradley, Jill Painter, Trevor Bradley and Tammy Bradley. – Herald photo by Nick Breedlove
