Irene Phillips
Irene Dillard Phillips, 82, of Hillcrest Street, Sylva, died Sunday, Sept. 4, 2005, at Harris Regional Hospital after a period of declining health.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 7, at East Sylva Baptist Church, of which she was a member, with the Revs. Charles Stevens and Charles Dean officiating. Burial was in Fairview Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers were Dave Stephens, Ed Stephens, Guy Dillard, Terry Dillard, Johnny Phillips and David Painter.
Honorary pallbearers were Harold Stephens, Jim Stephens, Blaine Stephens, Roger Hooper, Richard Hooper and Bascombe Hughes.
A native of Jackson County, where she lived most of her life, she had worked as an inspector at Skyland Textile and a greeter at McDonald’s until her health began to fail. She was a 1941 graduate of Sylva High School, where she played basketball. She enjoyed watching Atlanta Braves baseball. She was a daughter of the late Will and Maebelle Riddle Dillard.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Jake D. Phillips, who died in 1982; one daughter, Ida Jean Phillips; two sisters, Ilean Stephens and Willa Mae Poling; and one brother Kenneth Dillard.
Surviving are two sons, John Dillard Phillips of Gastonia and Gary Nathan Phillips of Tacoma, Wash.; one sister, Alice Turner of Elyria, Ohio; and two grandchildren.

Eddie Crowder
Jackie Edward “Eddie” Crowder, 43, of Qualla community, died Saturday, Sept. 3, 2005.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 6, in the chapel of Crisp Funeral Home with the Rev. Steven Phillipi officiating. Burial was in Hyatts Chapel Cemetery.
A native of Swain County, he lived in Jackson County for most of his life. He enjoyed riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle. He was a son of Sue Hightower of Whittier and Jack Crowder of Whittier.
Surviving, in addition to his parents, are one brother, Michael Crowder of Whittier; and maternal grandmother, Wilma Ward of Whittier.
Joseph Wilkey
Joseph Wilkey, 24, of Murphysboro, Ill., formerly of Joe Wilkey Road, Sylva, died Monday, Aug. 29, 2005, from injuries sustained in a work-related accident.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 2, at Sylva First Baptist Church, of which he was a member, with the Rev. Dr. John Bunn officiating. Burial was in Franklin Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Neal Bagley, Melvin Burnette, Josh Sutton, Josiah McCorkle, J.T. Throgmorton, Jeff Doyle, Matthew Roberts and Michael Dux.
He lived in Jackson County all but the last two months of his life, when he moved to Illinois. He was an Eagle Scout and a Master Mason in Dillsboro Masonic Lodge #459. He was a 1998 graduate of Smoky Mountain High School, where he was in the marching band. He was employed as a heating and air-conditioning technician. He was a son of Dennis and Judy Ann Nations Wilkey of Sylva.
Surviving, in addition to his parents, are his wife of two years, Jennifer Doyle Wilkey; and two sisters, Angela Wilkey Peeler of Greensboro and Janice Wilkey Hill of Sylva.

Gloria Ann Laramie
Gloria Ann Laramie, 61, of Toledo, Ohio, died Sunday, Aug. 28, 2005, in Hospice of Northwest Ohio in Perrysburg, Ohio.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug 31, with Pastor John Laprane officiating. Burial was in Ottawa Hills Memorial Park.
She was born in Sylva April 12, 1944. She was a member of the Stamp Collectors Club of Toledo and worked for the John H. Harland Co. and Buster Brown.
Surviving are her husband of 29 years, Harold Dudley Laramie Sr.; one son, Harold Dudley Laramie Jr.; one sister, Ruth Hill of Sylva; and one grandson.
Walter Funeral Home of Toledo was in charge of arrangements.
James Bunyan
James Bunyan Wise III, of Caney Fork Road, Cullowhee, died Saturday, Sept. 3, 2005, at Skyland Care Center of complications from emphysema.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 11, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Rev. Ron Allen officiating. A private burial will be held at a later date.
He was born Dec. 29, 1948, at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta. He was a 1967 graduate of Independence High School in Charlotte, and a 1977 graduate of Western Carolina University, where he received a bachelor of science degree in accounting. He graduated summa cum laude from Southwestern Community College in 2001 with an associate’s degree in computer information systems. He served in the U.S. Marine Corp from 1967 to 1971, serving in Vietnam from 1970-71. He was employed by Western Carolina University in the accounting department for 28 years until he died. He was a son of Mary P. Wise of Sylva and the late James Bunyan “J.B.” Wise Jr.
Surviving, in addition to his mother, is his wife of 25 years, Kathie Hardie Wise; one son, Charles James “Chas” Wise of the home; one brother, Jay Wise of Columbia, S.C.; and his stepmother, “Sissy” Wise of Mooresville.
