Soaring gas prices hit home
Gasoline prices have been rising for months, but they surged to record highs this week in the wake of Hurricane Katrina’s devastation along the Gulf Coast. Even regular was approaching $3 a gallon Wednesday morning at this Sylva station. The storm closed refineries and pipelines along the Gulf creating concerns about a gas shortage in addition to the high prices. For fuel-saving tips, visit the government’s web site www.fueleconomy.gov. Locally, Katrina’s damage was minimal even though tornado and flash flood warnings were issued for Jackson County. The monster storm stayed just far enough to the west to prevent a repeat of the destruction Western North Carolina received last year from Hurricanes Frances and Ivan. – Herald photo by Nick Breedlove |
