Early goals help Black Hawks to 5-1 victory over Mustangs
North Buncombe scored two quick goals and breezed to a 5-1 non-conference soccer victory over Smoky Mountain on Aug. 24 at Weaverville.
Oscar Valverde and Mark Buckley both scored two goals for the Black Hawks, who led 4-0 at halftime.
“We played a very good second half,” Coach Dolphus Brown said. “They’re a physical team.”
The scoring started early with Valverde connecting off an assist from Matt Waymont just 30 seconds into the game.
“The ball was played by Waymont to Valverde on the right side,” Brown said. “Valverde beat our left fullback and shot it from 15 yards out.”
Buckley’s goal with an assist from Gabe White made it 2-0 with three minutes elapsed.
“The ball was played from out of the midfield to the center,” Brown said. “He went by our left fullback and shot from 18 yards.”
Alex Roberson’s unassisted goal from 16 yards out at the 22-minute mark upped the margin to 3-0.
“He got the ball on the right side and exploded by the defender,” the coach said.
North led 4-0 at halftime as Buckley scored again with an assist from White at the 29-minute mark.
“The ball came off the right side,” Brown said. “Buckley took it in the middle, turned and shot from 10 yards.”
The Hawks’ final goal was scored by Valverde two minutes into the second half.
“The ball came in from the left, and he was in the middle of the box 13 yards out totally unmarked,” Brown said.
The Mustangs (0-2) averted a shutout when Coleman Corzine scored with an assist from Justin Garlock in the final minute.
“Coleman took the pass from the right side, turned and fired it from 15 yards,” Brown said.
J.R. Collins was moved to sweeper in the second half which was a key in helping the defense play better, according to the coach.
“We grew up a lot in the second half,” Brown said. “We may have been a little intimidated early.”
North had a 19-9 advantage in shots. Sterling Brady made seven saves for SM. Anthony Coxey and Roberson had four and two, respectively, for the Hawks.
