Brotherton is sixth in initial meet

Smoky Mountain’s Travis Brotherton finished sixth in the championship race at the Western North Carolina Cross Country Carnival held Saturday at Jackson Park in Hendersonville.

Brotherton had a time of 16:07, which was 41 seconds better than his time on the same course last year.

“That was some of the best competition in the state,” Coach Lawson Hopper said. “Travis ran a great race, and it was a great way to start the year.”

The three other Mustang men ran in the open division, but they did not have enough runners to qualify for team standings.

Bryan McManus was 84th in 22:14, and John Cody was 157th in 24:53. Austin Hamilton did not finish the race due to a sprained ankle.

Victoria Palmer topped the Lady Mustangs as she was 40th in 23:11.

“Victoria is still getting in cross country shape,” Hopper said. “She really wants to get there. She’s a fierce competitor.”

Other SM finishers included:

Molly Collins, 142nd, 26:07; Courtney Spaulding, 225th. 29:20; Emily Butcher, 227th, 29:25; Tori O’Neill, 276th, 33:08; and Emily Cowan, 277th, 33:09.

“We have a great team attitude, and the kids are working hard,” Hopper said. “The three freshmen (Butcher, O’Neill and Cowan) were so excited after the meet.”
