Accident sends two to Asheville hospital
By Carey Phillips
Two people were taken to Mission Hospitals in Asheville following a two-vehicle accident Sunday afternoon on U.S. 23-74 east of Sylva near mile marker 89.
Marla Jan Humphries, 27, of Alpharetta, Ga., was airlifted from the scene of the 2:30 p.m. accident. She was listed in fair condition Tuesday afternoon, according to a hospital spokesman.
Her passenger, 24-year-old Bart Pierce of Grayson, Ga., was first taken to Harris Regional Hospital then transferred to Mission. He was still listed as a patient Tuesday afternoon, but no condition report was available.
Humphries was traveling west in a 1998 Lexus, which was struck by an eastbound 2004 Chevrolet pickup truck driven by 46-year-old David Young of Burnsville.
A report filed by Trooper Travis Crisp of the N.C. Highway Patrol indicated Young’s truck, which was pulling a utility trailer, crossed the median and hit the Lexus.
Young was charged with reckless driving. Exceeding a safe speed was cited as a contributing factor, according to Crisp’s report.
Young was admitted to Harris Regional, according to a hospital spokesman, but he was not listed as a patient Tuesday afternoon.
Westbound traffic backed up several miles after the accident. Eastbound lanes were also blocked while the helicopter was at the scene.
