Sixty-five years ago next week railroad workers (top photo) were hard at work repairing damage to a downtown section of track caused by Jackson County’s greatest natural disaster, the Aug. 29-30, 1940 flood. The lower photo shows the same stretch of track as it looks today. In the older photo, the second building on the left (telephone pole is centered on it) housed the Asheville Mica Co., and the next building past it is the old Sylva Depot, which was torn down during the late 1970s. In the 2005 photo, the buildings on the left are the Pet Stop, left, Ward’s Plumbing and Heating Co., and the buildings on the right are the former Hooper Builders Supply, right, and LifeWay Community Church. Both images were taken from the railroad track just after it crosses Scotts Creek. The Courthouse cupola is visible in the distance in both photos. – Herald file photo (top) and Herald photo by Nick Breedlove
