Hoyle Hedrick
John Hoyle Hedrick, 76, of Lexington, died Tuesday, Aug. 16, 2005, at Lexington Memorial Hospital after a brief illness.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 19, at Bethany United Methodist Church, of which he was a member, with Dr. Charles L. Hutchens and the Rev. Benn Fleming officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
He was born in Davidson County on May 29, 1929, and was employed with Wilson Lumber Co. He was self-employed until the time of his retirement, and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a son of the late Thurman Lee Hedrick Sr. and Letha Bell Hedrick.
He was also preceded in death by three brothers, T.L. Hedrick, Paul Hedrick and Harold Hedrick.
Surviving are one daughter, Patricia Hedrick Beasley of Sylva; one son, John Hoyle Hedrick Jr. of Salisbury; three brothers, Dwight Hedrick Sr., Odell Hedrick and C.J. Hedrick, all of Lexington; one sister, Helen Wilson of Salisbury; and one grandson.

Kelly Cole
Kelly O. Cole, 91, of Bryson City, died Tuesday, Aug. 16, 2005.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 19, in the chapel of Bill Moody Funeral Home with the Revs. Sam McMahan and David Burch officiating. Burial was in Swain Memorial Park.
Pallbearers were David Monteith, Michael Sherrill, David Laney, Bud Watkins, Jeff Fouts and Mitch Jenkins.
He was a native of Swain County and was a member of Rock Creek Baptist Church, where he was a Sunday school teacher. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, hiking and ginseng digging. He was a son of the late William Chastain Cole and Margaret Monteith Cole.
He was also preceded in death by one brother, Vernie Cole.
Surviving are one brother, Rondall Cole of Cashiers; five sons, Wallace, Bruce and David Cole, all of Bryson City, Ned Cole of Harrogate, Tenn., and Roger Cole of Trinity; three daughters, Louise Cochran of Lawndale, and Deborah Pye and Loretta Cole, both of Bryson City; 13 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Ruth West
Ruth McMaster West, 90, of Cullowhee, died Thursday, Aug. 11, 2005, at Mountain Trace Nursing Center.
A memorial service is planned at a later date.
Born Nov. 20, 1914, in Zanesville, Ohio, she was a daughter of the late Eleanor and Ben McMaster. She lived in Miami and Jacksonville, Fla., before moving to Cullowhee around 1995.
She was a graduate of Ohio State University and obtained a master’s degree in social work from Smith College. She worked for many years as a volunteer social worker in the downtown area in Jacksonville and was an active member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Jacksonville.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, William Goldsmith West; one son, William McMaster West; and one sister, Jean Blickle.
Surviving are three sons, Jim West of Phoenix, Ariz., Tom West of Cullowhee and Mike West of Atlanta; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Casey Carter
Casey Lee Carter, 22, of Morganton, died Saturday, Aug. 20, 2005, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 23, at Morganton First United Methodist Church, of which he was a member. Burial was in Green Hills Cemetery in Asheville.
He was a 2001 graduate of Freedom High School and a junior at East Carolina University. He was a son of Joy and Stan Carter of Morganton.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Ted and Pauline Jenkins.
Surviving are one sister, Jennifer Carter of Morganton; one brother, Cory Carter of Morganton; paternal grandparents, Ernest and Judy Carter of Asheville; and several aunts and uncles, including Anna and Tommy Ginn of Sylva.

Lucille Wilson
Lucille Wilson, 89, of Sylva, died Thursday, Aug. 18, 2005, after a period of declining health.
Memorial services were held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 20, at Sylva First United Methodist Church, of which she was a member, with the Revs. Paul Christy and Phyllis Glahn officiating.
She was retired from Allison’s Inc., where she was the secretary and bookkeeper. She was a daughter of the late Thomas Oscar Wilson and Luetta Buchanan Wilson.
She was also preceded in death by three brothers, Tom, Joe and Bill Wilson; and one sister, Margaret Henson.
Surviving are two sisters, Polly Williams of Oak Ridge, Tenn., and Becky Davis of Waynesville; and one brother, Lewis Wilson of Wilson.

Myrtle Leopard
Myrtle Ruby Leopard, 88, of Glenville, died Saturday, Aug. 20, 2005, after a period of declining health.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 23, at Hamburg Baptist Church. Burial was in the church cemetery.
She was a member of Glady Branch Baptist Church. She was a daughter of the late John Paul Franks and Elam Franks.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Harlie Morgan Leopard.
Surviving are one son, James Leopard of Albemarle; four sisters, Edna Stewart of Brevard, Reba Franks of Arizona, Blannie Cochran of Orlando, Fla., and Mary Bumgarner of Gastonia; and one granddaughter.

Bill Rickman
William K. “Bill” Rickman, 67, of Christmas, Fla., died Thursday, Aug. 18, 2005.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 28, at American Legion Post 242 in Bithlo, Fla.
He was born in Sylva June 23, 1938, and was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He was a member of the American Legion and a carpenter for many years. He enjoyed fishing and woodworking.
Surviving are his wife, Jean Rickman; three sons, Kenneth Rickman, Christopher Vaughn and Jimmy Letasky; five daughters, Judy Rogers, Mary Hampton, Theresa King, Betty Jean Hulen and Denise Edwards; two brothers, Jim and Jack; three sisters, Carolyn, Jeanie and Geneva; 17 grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
Jeff Simmons
Jeffrey Lee “Jeff” Simmons, 24, of Clyde died Friday, Aug. 12, 2005, from injuries sustained in a boating accident on Lake Douglas, Tenn.
Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 18, at Morning Star Cemetery with the Rev. Perry Hines officiating.
Pallbearers were Aaron Ingle, Aaron Cassels, Heath Pressley, Hubert Thomas, Greg Palmer, Jason Queen, Scott Turner, Camden Warren, Tyler Palmer and Mike Millares.
He was a native of Pensacola, Fla., but had lived in Haywood County since 1984. He was a 1998 graduate of Pisgah High School, and attended Western Carolina University and Haywood Community College. He was a construction supervisor with Palmer Construction of Waynesville and formerly attended Canton Wesleyan Church. He enjoyed playing baseball and golf.
He was preceded in death by paternal grandparents, Hubert Simmons and Voncile R. King.
Surviving are his wife of three years, Sky Walsh Simmons; his parents, Michael L. Simmons of Clyde and Diane Hardy Simmons of Canton; maternal grandparents, Montez and Maloye Ferguson of Cantonment, Fla.; and two brothers, Kyle Simmons of Clyde and Kevin Simmons of Canton.

Paul Bryson
Paul W. Bryson, 84, of Skyland Care Center, Sylva, died Thursday, Aug. 18, 2005, at Harris Regional Hospital after a period of declining health.
Graveside services were held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 20, in Parris Cemetery with the Rev. Eddie Stillwell officiating. Military rites were conducted by the U.S. Army.
A native of Jackson County, where he lived most of his life, he was a nurse and was retired from the U.S. Army having served in World War II. He was the last surviving child of the late Ed and Caroline Jenkins Bryson.
Surviving are several nieces and nephews.

Emma Rogers
Emma Nell Rogers, 79, of Austin, Texas, died Monday, Aug. 15, 2005.
Graveside services were held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 18, at Cook-Walden Capital Parks Cemetery in Pflugerville, Texas.
She was born Jan. 6, 1926, in East LaPorte to the late Leon and Eula Moody.
She was also preceded in death by her husband of 44 years.
Surviving are three sons, Kenneth, Bruce and Gary Rogers; three daughters, Joan Wildman, Susan Cox and Sandra Ginthner; one sister, Genevieve Nicholson; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
