Six compete to be top teacher - Jackson County’s Teacher of the Year will be named tonight (Thursday) during a banquet at Western Carolina University’s Ramsey Center. Six educators, one from each county school, were nominated last spring by their peers for the honor. Judges will bestow the countywide title based on candidate-compiled portfolios and judges’ interviews held Monday (Aug. 15). Duke is ‘taking a break’ to re-evaluate Pine Creek docks - Controversy surrounding some docks on Lake Glenville has subsided, at least for now, in light of new information. Dock owners explained their position to Duke Power Nantahala District Manager Fred Alexander two weeks ago. SCC opens new Cashiers Center - Southwestern Community College’s Cashiers Center has moved to a new location that almost doubles the space available for classes and other services. The new building, located on Frank Allen Road, includes 4,054 square feet with a 540-square-foot garage, which will be converted to a crafts lab this fall. The building is the former Nichols home, which was purchased by Jackson County for SCC’s use as a center for the people of the Cashiers area.
