Housing initiative finishes third home

081805edithbeasley
Commissioners’ Chairman Brian McMahan congratulates Beta Road resident Cora Beasley last week (Aug. 11) as he presents her with the key to her new home. On hand to help celebrate are, from left, Commissioners Eddie Madden and Roberta Crawford; Beasley; McMahan; Commissioner Joe Cowan; Joan Stillwell, director of Community Development for Jackson County; volunteer R.L. Haskett;  and county Manager Ken Westmoreland. (Commissioner Conrad Burrell was not present for the photo.) Beasley received a new house to replace her former 70-year-old home, which had unsafe wiring and structural damage, and was determined to be beyond repair, Stillwell said. Beasley’s new house cost some $45,000, which was paid through N.C. Division of Community Assistance and U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development as part of Jackson County’s Scattered Site Housing initiative. Haskett, a retired builder, and other volunteers, including Jack Farmer, E.J. Pullium, and Sam Beck worked on the Beasley house from start to finish, Stillwell said. “This house would not have been possible without the help of our many dedicated volunteers, who are too numerous to mention here,” Stillwell said. This is the third replacement house Scattered Site has built with all-volunteer labor, according to Stillwell. – Herald photo by Nick Breedlove
