All four towns to have contested mayoral races this November

All four Jackson County municipalities will have contested elections for mayor Nov. 8.
Sylva Mayor Brenda Oliver nearly escaped opposition, but town board member Danny Allen filed to run for mayor at the last minute Friday.
Forest Hills Mayor Jim Davis also is opposed by a current member of that town’s board, Sue Burton.
The board seats of Allen and Burton are not up for election this year.
Webster Mayor Steve Gray is opposed by Sam Gray.
In Dillsboro, Mayor Jean Hartbarger faces opposition from T.J. Walker.
Contested board races are set for Sylva, Webster and Dillsboro although the filing period had to be extended for Dillsboro because there were originally not enough candidates for its five board seats.
Anne Cabe is seeking re-election to one of two seats open on the Sylva board. Joining the race are Harold Hensley and Stacy Knotts.
Eldridge Painter did not file for re-election.
Webster has eight candidates seeking its five board seats. Incumbents are Billie Bryson, Jean Davenport and Louise Bedford. Also running for office are Frances Berry, Barbara Collins, Dawn Breakiron, Sharon Myers and Laura Spaulding.
Not seeking re-election are Raymond Ledford and Kirk Stephens.
Dillsboro incumbents Jim Cochran and Mike Fitzgerald filed for board seats as did Jim Dukes and Jimmy Cabe.
With only four candidates for five seats, filing was extended until noon Wednesday, Aug. 10. As of Wednesday morning, John Faulk and incumbent Bud Smith had joined the list of Dillsboro candidates.
Dillsboro board members not filing for re-election are Jean Phillips and Emma Wertenberger.
Forest Hills board members Jim Wallace and Dick Iobst are unopposed for re-election.
