Lending a hand
Clarence Pressley, left in lower photo, greets one of the volunteers who turned out Tuesday (Aug. 2) to donate time, effort and supplies to construct a ramp at his house. Pressley, a retired barber and unofficial “Mayor of Cullowhee,” suffers from Parkinson’s disease, which impairs mobility. Project CARE coordinator Ben Friddle, who headed the construction, said the focus of such jobs is safety. “Our goal is to keep the elderly out of nursing homes,” he said. Project CARE volunteers, like former Superintendent Charlie McConnell, right in top photo, and Pat Angel, build ramps, handrails and other safety devices for homes of Jackson County residents older than 60. – Herald photos by Nick Breedlove
