Deadline looms to file for town elections

By Carey Phillips

With the deadline to file for municipal offices approaching, Forest Hills is the only one of Jackson County’s four municipalities to be assured of having a contested election on Nov. 8.

Sue Burton, a Forest Hills board member whose seat is not up for election this year, has filed to challenge incumbent Jim Davis for mayor.

The filing deadline is noon Friday, Aug. 5. As of Tuesday afternoon, Forest Hills was not only the lone town to have a contested race but also the only one with enough candidates filing to fill available board seats. Incumbents Dick Iobst and Jim Wallace have filed for the two open positions on the Forest Hills board.

Kirk Stephens, a Webster board member who had filed for mayor, has now withdrawn from the race.

Incumbents Jean Davenport, Louise Bedford and Billie Bryson are running for Webster board seats. All five board positions are open.

Sylva and Dillsboro have seen no filing activity in the past week.

Sylva Mayor Brenda Oliver has filed for re-election as has board member Anne Cabe. Another board seat is open.

T.J. Walker, a political newcomer has filed for Dillsboro mayor. Incumbents Jim Cochran and Mike Fitzgerald are seeking re-election to the Dillsboro board, which has all five seats available.

Elections in all of the municipalities are non-partisan.
