More than 30,000 are expected to ride with Thomas while he’s in town, a Great Smoky Mountains Railroad spokesman said. Thomas, who is currently celebrating his 60th anniversary, is a welcome site in Dillsboro, Mayor Jean Hartbarger said. “Thomas is wonderful, and we’re happy to see him here. Regional airport authority bill passes; includes limits on helicopter operations - A bill to allow the creation of a regional airport authority, which was stalled in committee for weeks, cleared both chambers of the state Legislature Monday (July 25). House Bill 1051, which was opposed by members of the Jackson County Airport Authority, gives Jackson and Macon county officials a mechanism to create a joint Jackson-Macon airport authority, said Rep. School officials juggle principals - Three more Jackson County schools will have new administrators when the school year starts in less than a month. Both Fairview School and Smoky Mountain High School have new assistant principals, while the School of Alternatives has a new principal. Carolyn Pannell was chosen to fill the vacancy at Fairview created when Nathan Frizzell left to serve as principal at Cullowhee Valley School. Pannell is a 1979 graduate of Cullowhee High School.
