AN OLD WEST MOUNTAIN RENDEZVOUS is scheduled for Saturday, July 9, from 10 a.m. until  6 p.m. at Mountain Brook Cottages off U.S. 441 between Franklin and Dillsboro. The event is believed to be the first of its kind in North Carolina. The public is invited to see flint-knapping, basket-weaving, bow-making, skin-tanning and other hands-on demonstrations. Trade blankets displaying wares of the mountain men will be set up in front of their tents and campfires will speckle the site. Socialize and hear stories around the camp as the re-enactors demonstrate life as it was “way back then.” Bonnets and buckskin period costumes are encouraged. Special interest demonstrations such as tomahawk-throwing, use of bow and arrow and an informative walk in the woods will be available at a cost of $20 for adults, $10 for children age 6-12 and free to children under age 6. Admission to the encampment will be $5 per person with children under 6 free. For cottage reservations, which include admission to the special interest demonstrations, call 586-4329.
