DON’T FORGET THE TWO BENEFIT BLUEGRASS FESTIVALS that are coming up. Rotary’s fund-raiser will be this Friday at Smoky Mountain High School’s football stadium. A barbecue dinner begins at 5 p.m., with featured performers Larry Cordle and Lonesome Standard Time and Whitewater Bluegrass Co. to start picking at 7 p.m. The second event, set for Saturday, June 25, at the Jackson County Recreation Complex in Cullowhee, will be co-sponsored by Jackson County Community Foundation and the Jackson County Recreation Department. Featured performers will again include Grammy-award-winner Marc Pruett and Whitewater Bluegrass Co., along with Chuck Norris and Evergreen and other local favorites. Music will begin at 4 p.m. and continue through 10 p.m. Food and drinks will be available for purchase on site. Those attending may bring lawn chairs and blankets; alcohol and pets are not allowed.

SYLVA’S METROSTAT COMMUNICATIONS has announced the news that they will soon be able to offer their customers improved bandwidth that will lead to much faster Internet connections. According to Metrostat’s John Kevlin, the company has reached an agreement with the Education and Research Consortium that will link Metrostat’s local “last mile” optical network with ERC’s regional, high-capacity trunk line. The deal will allow Metrostat to expand Internet connectivity tenfold while maintaining prices comparable to that paid in major metropolitan areas. Partial funding for the project came through a grant made to Metrostat by AdvantageWest, the Western North Carolina regional economic development commission. In explaining the significance of this new step for his company, Kevlin compared Internet service to a water system. “Basically, we built the local plumbing,” he said. However, without a main trunk line to hook to, it was as if his network were being supplied by a garden hose. “We were lacking a big pipe to the outside world,” Kevlin said. “The ERC connection gives us that big pipe.”

THE NURSING NETWORK will hold its grand opening Wednesday, June 22, at 2 p.m. The business is located in East Sylva Shopping Center.

WE RECEIVED A NOTE from the Whitis family of Whitley City, Ky., that sang the praises of our area in general and of the folks at Granny’s Kitchen in particular. When the family had car trouble, restaurant employees were helpful and tracked down a mechanic on a Saturday afternoon. “It is good to know that ‘good old Southern hospitality’ and helping others is not dead,” the Whitis family wrote.
