Betsy George
Betsy Jumper George, 74, of Cherokee, died Tuesday, May 31, 2005, at Cherokee Indian Hospital.
Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 2, at Hickory Gap Cemetery in Robbinsville with the Rev. James “Bo” Parris officiating.
Pallbearers were her nephews.
A native of Graham County, she lived most of her life in Cherokee. She was a daughter of the late Henry and Bessie Smoker Jumper.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Sherman George.
Surviving are two daughters, Nora Watford French and Christine Jumper Campbell, both of Cherokee; one sister, Annie Belle Welch of Robbinsville; and three brothers, Jerry, Jesse and Willie Jumper, all of Robbinsville.
Crisp Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Charles Walker
Charles McGregor Walker Jr., of Tunnel Mountain Road, Sylva, died Saturday, June 4, 2005, at Harris Regional Hospital.
Memorial services were held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 7, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Rev. Johnny Norris officiating.

Beverly Harbol
Beverly Miller Harbol, 54, of Dixie Lane, Sylva, died Monday, May 30, 2005, at her residence after a period of declining health.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 3, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with Father O’Neal officiating. Burial was in Parris Cemetery.
A native of Queens, N.Y., she had lived in Jackson County for the past two years. She was a daughter of Helen Miller of Boynton Beach, Fla., and the late Bernard Miller.
She was also preceded in death by one grandson.
Surviving are her husband of five years, David J. Harbol; one daughter, Rachel of Long Island, N.Y.; two stepdaughters, Amber Chodak of Whittier and Michele Harbol of Bryson City; three sons, Frank and William Saccone, both of Whittier, and Ralph Saccone of West Palm Beach, Fla.; one sister, Karen Ryan of Wellington, Fla.; one brother, Russell Miller of Florida; and six grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to the family.
Ola Locust
Ola M. Ruff Locust, 60, of Cherokee’s Goose Creek community, died Sunday, May 29, 2005, at her residence.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 1, at Goose Creek Baptist Church, of which she was a member, with the Revs. Arthur Locust and Steve Fletcher officiating. Burial was in Locust Family Cemetery.
Pallbearers were James Burgess, Gary Tippins, Tony Taylor, Christopher Beheler, Roger Smith, Joey Smith, Fred Welch, Buddy Mathis, Johnson Locust and Rodney Ruff.
She was a daughter of the late Roy Chester Ruff and Dortha Mae Lee Ruff.
She was also preceded in death by a twin brother, Otis Arthur Ruff; one brother, Roy Ray Ruff; two sisters, Ellie Kay Ruff and Ellen Faye Ruff Smith; and one granddaughter.
Surviving are her husband of 30 years, Rufus Locust; three daughters, Teresa Lynn Burgess Dover of the home, Barbara Luellen Burgess Riley of Lenoir and Patsy Jean Burgess of Hickory; one son, James Allen Burgess of the home; two brothers, Eddie Jerry Ruff of Kings Mountain and James Joseph Ruff of Matthews; two sisters, Betty Ann Mills and Edna Mary Fletcher, both of Shelby; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

James Ledford
James D. Ledford, 67, of Cherokee’s Birdtown community, died Friday, June 3, 2005, at Cherokee Indian Hospital.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 6, in the chapel of Crisp Funeral Home with Pastor Red Bradley officiating. Burial was in Birdtown Cemetery.
A native of Cherokee, he was a son of the late Moses and Cordelia Murphy Ledford.
He was also preceded in death by one son, Lee Ledford.
Surviving are his wife of 28 years, Darlene Feather Ledford; two sons, Chip Ledford of Cherokee and Chuck Ledford of the U.S. Marine Corps; two stepsons, Eddie and Dwayne Bird, both of Cherokee; three sisters, Irma Bradley and Mary Kight, both of Cherokee, and Carol Howard of Old Fort; four brothers, Virgil, Carlson and Charlie Ledford, all of Cherokee, and Moses Ledford Jr. of Windsor; several grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
E.J. Nations
E.J. Nations, 75, of Dillsboro, died unexpectedly Saturday, June 4, 2005, at his residence.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 7, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Rev. Sherrill Ammons officiating. Burial was in Hensley Cemetery.
He was a native and lifelong resident of Jackson County and a retired maintenance worker with Ferguson Rock Quarry. He was a son of the late Harley and Hester Nations.
He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Hilda and Verma; and one brother, Ray.
Surviving are three sisters, Opal Stanley, Frances Anderson and Shirley Nations, all of Sylva; and four brothers, Willard Nations of Cartersville, Ga., Eugene Nations of Canton, Ga., and Hayes and Vance Nations, both of Sylva.
Memorials may be made to the Hensley Cemetery Fund.
Ruby Franklin
Ruby Franklin of Mountain Trace Nursing Center, Sylva, died Sunday, June 5, 2005, at Harris Regional Hospital after a period of declining health.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 8, at Love’s Chapel United Methodist Church with the Revs. Dan Stiles, Eddie Stillwell and Johnny Norris officiating. Burial was in Ashe Cemetery.
A native of Macon County, she lived most of her life in Jackson County. She had worked as an inspector for Buster Brown and was a member of Love’s Chapel United Methodist Church, where she was a choir member. She was the daughter of the late Alec and Rebecca Cook Rogers and was also preceded in death by her husband, Thurman N. Franklin who died in 1987, three sisters, seven brothers, one grandchild and two infant children.
Surviving are two daughters, Reba Beck of Hayesville and Phoebe Anne Bateman of Franklin; three sons, Boyd Franklin of Petros, Tenn., Ray Franklin of Sylva and Mark Franklin of Franklin; one brother, John Henry Rogers of Waynesville; 15 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.

Alton Abernathy
Alton Ray Abernathy, 66, of Cullowhee, died Saturday, May 28, 2005, at Tsali Care Center in Cherokee after an extended illness.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 12, at the residence. In case of rain, services will be held at Speedwell United Methodist Church.
He was a retiree of BASF Corp. in Enka.
Surviving are his wife, Patricia Robin Abernathy; and one sister, Charlotte Branch of Atlanta.

Vivian Phillips
Vivian Frizzell Phillips, 55, of Charlotte, formerly of Jackson County, died Monday, June 6, 2005, at Elizabeth’s Place after an extended illness.
Memorial services will be announced at a later date.
Born Nov. 26, 1949, in Jackson County, she lived in Charlotte for more than 20 years. She was a daughter of the late Florence and Howard Frizzell.
She was also preceded in death by one sister, Sue Brooks; and two brothers, Kenneth Frizzell and Michael Frizzell.
Surviving are her husband, Dale Phillips; three sisters, Sheila Nations of Wilmot, Tina Williams of Qualla and Barbara Jones of Whittier; three brothers, Charlie Frizzell of Cherokee, Jimmy Frizzell of Charlotte and Scotty Frizzell of Dillsboro; and one son, Don Phillips of Charlotte.
