Vandals destroy planters
 |
Vandals struck the Jackson County Courthouse the night of May 30, pushing over eight ornate concrete planters, said Capt. Steve Lillard of the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office. Of those, three were shattered and five suffered damage, Lillard said. Officers received news of the incident at about 8 a.m. Tuesday morning (May 31) from dispatch officers, Lillard said. The vandalism was reported about 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday, and the Courthouse area had been last checked around 8 p.m. the night before. Deputies are investigating the incident because the Courthouse is county property, Lillard said, but have no leads at this time. Another instance of vandalism Monday night – a broken window in the basement of Peeble’s department store, is being looked into by the Sylva Police Department, Sylva Police Chief Jeff Jamison said. A reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest of those responsible for the damage at the Courthouse, Lillard said. Anyone with information is asked to call the Crime Stoppers hotline at 631-1125 or share tips online at sheriff.jacksonnc.org. – Herald photo by Nick Breedlove |
