IT’S BY NATURE gallery on Main Street will hold an opening reception Friday, June 3, from 7 to 9 p.m. for Balsam potter Laurey-Faye Long, this month’s featured artist. For more information, see the story on page 1C. Long’s work will be on display through June 30.

SYLVA ROTARY is planning a bluegrass and barbecue festival Friday, June 17, at 7 p.m. in Smoky Mountain High School’s Carr Hooper Stadium. Rotary members will begin serving plates at 5 p.m. Tickets for the music show, headlined by Larry Cordle and Lonesome Standard Time and local favorites Whitewater Bluegrass Co., featuring Grammy-winner Marc Pruett, are $10 and will be available at the gate. Barbecue plates will cost $5. In the event of rain, the show will move to Southwestern Community College’s Myers Auditorium. Proceeds will go to support Rotary community service projects like landscaping at SMHS, renovations at Sylva’s Poteet Park and the Community Table. TICKETS ARE ON SALE NOW for one of Cashiers’ most popular summertime events – the Rotary Club of Cashiers Valley’s annual Symphony Under the Stars. Overlooking Fairfield Lake, the event is an evening of Fourth of July fireworks teamed with a world class orchestra playing live. The Greenville Symphony Orchestra will return this year on Saturday, July 2. Gates will open at 5 p.m., and the music begins at 7:30. To purchase tickets, call 743-2525.


DOREYL CAIN will offer a summer pastel workshop series at Nature’s Home Preserve in Canada community beginning Saturday, June 4, from 2 until 5 p.m. Classes will continue the first Saturday of each month through October, but each will be self-contained, with participants completing a painting each time. Hiking may possibly be involved. A $36 fee covers art materials and instruction for each session. For more information, call Cain at 293-2239.

CODY BLANTON, grandson of Charles and Dot Daves of Sylva, has been named to the national honor roll by the U.S. Achievement Academy. The son of Ray and Carla Blanton of Callaway, Md., Cody is a student at Leonardtown Middle School. “Recognizing and supporting our youth is more important that ever before in America’s history,” said George Stevens, founder of the U.S. Achievement Academy.”(These students) should be congratulated and appreciated for their dedication to excellence and achievement.”
