Obituary Information

The Sylva Herald prints obituaries free of charge as a service to its readers.

When possible, obituaries should be submitted to The Herald from the funeral home in charge of arrangements. Information received will be printed in our standard obituary format. As is the case with all information submitted to The Herald, we reserve the right to edit obituary information to fit our standard format.

We publish names of the deceased's children; we also include the number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We do not include in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews or special friends.

Included in a brief history of the deceased is items such as their employment, professional, civic, community and religious affiliations. We omit personal tributes.

To publish a more detailed obituary or one in another format, the announcement can run as a paid advertisement.

Catherine Bradley

Catherine Bowman Bradley, 84, of Cherokee, died Tuesday, May 24, 2005.

Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 27, in Drama Cemetery with the Rev. Merritt Youngdeer officiating.

She was a native of Graham County and had been a cashier and meat wrapper in Foodfair Stores for 20 years. She was a librarian at Grandy Park Library in Norfolk, Va., a worker at Brook Baptist Church outreach program and a member of Cherokee Baptist Church. She was a daughter of Grace Rose and Roy Bowman.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis Jim Bradley, who died in 1984; two brothers, Buster Bowman and Tom Bowman; and two sisters, Lorene Massey and Merle Steward.

Surviving are four sons, John Bradley and Soloman Bradley, both of Cherokee, Harold R. Bradley of Whittier, and Thomas J. Bradley of Virginia Beach, Va.; one daughter, Vivian Wicker of Chesapeake, Va.; two sisters, Dorothy Bowman of Alabama and Jean Ward of Florida; seven grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Bill Moody Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.



Kelly Melton

Kelly Melton, 60, of Holbrook Road, Franklin, died unexpectedly Wednesday, May 25, 2005, at his residence.

Funeral services were held at 7 p.m. Saturday, May 28, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Revs. Don Moffitt and Sherrill Ammons officiating. His ashes will be scattered over Eureka Bay in California at a later date.

A native of Jackson County, he lived in Eureka, Calif., from 1964 until he moved to Macon County in 1992. He worked as a construction worker for the City of Eureka and was an outdoorsman. He was a son of the late Claude and Beulah Hoxit Melton.

He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Willard and Wayne; and two sisters, Blanche and an infant sister.

Surviving are one son, Colen Kelly Melton II of Phoenix, Ariz.; three sisters, Ruth Brooks of Sylva, Wanda Tallent of Franklin and Louise Buchanan of Newberry, S.C.; four brothers, Howard and Glenn Melton, both of Sylva, Burder Melton of Pikeville, Ky., and Grady Melton of Eureka; and one granddaughter.

Geneva Stepp

Geneva Cabe Stepp, 70, of East Fork Road, Sylva, died Tuesday, May 17, 2005, at Harris Regional Hospital after a period of declining health.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, May 20, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Revs. Eddie Stillwell, Sherrill Ammons and Ricky Connor officiating. Burial was in Sherrill Cemetery.

Pallbearers were David Cabe, Roger Cabe, James Cabe, Chris Cabe, Kent Cochran, David Nations, Darrell Mathis, Steven Woodard, Steve Pressley and Billy Gunter.

A native of Swain County, she had lived most of her life in Jackson County. She was a member of Patterson Chapel Baptist Church. She was a daughter of the late Ralph and Rosalee Dills Cabe.

She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Harold and Paul Cabe.

Surviving are her husband of 51 years, William Stepp; two daughters, Linda Cody of Bryson City and Mary Woodard of Sylva; two sons, Billy Ray Stepp and Carl Stepp, both of Sylva; four sisters; two brothers, 10 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.



Clayborn Bryson

James Clayborn Bryson, 98, of Buff Creek Road, Sylva, died unexpectedly Monday, May 30, 2005, at Skyland Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. today (Thursday, June 2) at Buff Creek Baptist Church, of which he was a member, with the Revs. Gerald Morris and Wayne Sorrells officiating. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in Hamburg Cemetery with Masonic rites being conducted by the Glenville Lodge No. 551, of which he was a member.

Pallbearers will be his nephews.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he was a retired farmer and a Master Mason. He received a 60-year membership pen from the Masons on March 11, 2003. He was a son of the late James Robert and Mary Nancy Fowler Bryson.

He was also preceded in death by two wives, Kate Parris Bryson and Helen Blanton Bryson; two brothers, Frank Bryson and Marvin Bryson; and one sister, Hazel Bryson Thomas.

Surviving are one stepson, Jerry Brooks of Gallatin, Tenn.; one stepdaughter, Elaine Brooks Harwood of Chapel Hill; one sister, Christine Howard of Sylva; five stepgrandchildren; and one great grandson.

Memorials may be made to Hamburg Baptist Church or Buff Creek Baptist Church.

Clara Parris

Clara A. “Pete” Davis Parris, 96, of U.S. 74, Whittier, died Friday, May 27, 2005, at Skyland Care Center after a period of declining health.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 28, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Rev. Rich Peoples officiating. Burial was in Franklin Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Christopher Childers, Michael Childers Jr., Carl A. Davis Jr., James Albert Davis, Samuel Thomas and Patrick Thomas.

A native of Hamilton County, Tenn., she had lived in Jackson County since 1928. She was a member of Scotts Creek Baptist Church and was a daughter of the late Mark and Phoebe Russell.

She was also preceded in death by two husbands, James T. Davis and Perry Parris; three brothers, Dewey, Wallace and George Russell; and three sisters, Anna Mae Renegar, Bessie Lee Shull and Viola Kull.

Surviving are one daughter, McAline Childers Shelton of Chattanooga, Tenn.; two grandsons; and two great-grandsons.

Lilly Cagle

Lilly A. Cagle, 84, of Big Burn Circle, Sylva, died Monday, May 30, 2005, at Harris Regional Hospital after a period of declining health.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday, June 2) in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Revs. Dennis Burrell, Charles Carnes, Tim Dillard, Sherrill Ammons, Larry Nations and Larry Cagle officiating. The family was scheduled to receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, June 1, at the funeral home. Burial will be in Cagle Family Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Daniel Smith, Jack Sutton, Shane Danner, Doyle Buchanan, and Lynn and Tim Biddix.

She was a native and lifelong resident of Jackson County and a member of Calvary Baptist Church. She was the last of 10 children of the late Rufus and Tereasie Woods Shuler.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Earl H. Cagle; one son, Burnette Cagle; two daughters, Wilma and Artie Cagle; one stepdaughter, Nanette Buchanan; and two stepsons, Frank and Will Cagle.

Surviving are four daughters, Jessie Shields, Annie D. Moore, Mary Sue Coggins and Martha Lou Buchanan, all of Sylva; two sons, Allen Cagle and Earl Robert Cagle Jr., both of Sylva; 12 grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; more than 20 great-grandchildren; four stepgreat-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Frank Ledford

Frank Ledford, 80, of Whittier, formerly of Bradenton, Fla., died Wednesday, May 25, 2005, at Mountain Trace Nursing Center.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 27, in the chapel of Shannon Funeral Home in Bradenton. Burial was in Palmetto Cemetery.

He was born Jan. 18, 1925, in Clay County, Ky., and moved to Bradenton in 1958 from Ohio. He was a retired roofer.

Surviving are four daughters, Judy Olfield of Ohio, Emma Squires of Polk City, Fla., Connie Hewory of Sarasota, Fla., and Shirlena Fyock of Port Charlotte, Fla.; two sons, James of Whittier and Ralph of Ohio; 24 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Melton-Riddle Funeral Home was in charge of local arrangements.



R.G. Taylor

R.G. Taylor, 95, of Angier, died Friday, May 27, 2005, after a brief illness.

Memorial services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 31, at Angier United Methodist Church. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 1, in East View Cemetery.

He was born April 13, 1910, and attended Wadesboro City Schools, from which he graduated in 1928. He worked at the Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth, Va., during World War II. After the war he returned to Wadesboro where he operated Wadesboro Plumbing and Heating Company until he retired in 1975. Following his retirement he lived in Charlotte until 1980 working as a grading contractor. He was a member of Wadesboro First United Methodist Church, the Wadesboro Fire Department and Woodmen of the World. He was the oldest of eight children of the late Algie Lee and Annie Coggin Taylor.

He was also preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Anne Elizabeth Dougherty Taylor, who died in 1993; one son, John Algie Taylor; three brothers, Braxton Horace Taylor, Algie Lee “Buddy” Taylor and Herbert Taylor; and three sisters, Mavor Taylor Johnson, Ruth Taylor Wishart and Alice Taylor.

Surviving are two sons, Thomas S. Taylor of Angier and James Braxton Taylor of Wilmington; one sister, Margaret Eva Taylor Lane of Hertford; eight grandchildren, including Michael Algie Taylor of Sylva; and six great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Boy Scouts of America, Occoneechee Council in Raleigh or Cape Fear Council in Wilmington.

Ronnie Davis

Ronnie Davis, 51, of Touchstone Way, Sylva, died unexpectedly Monday, May 23, 2005, at his residence.

Private services were held in Parris Cemetery on Wednesday, May 25.

A native of Jackson County where he lived most of his life, he was a miner for Virginia Coal Company and a member of Love’s Chapel United Methodist Church. He was a son of the late Chris and Catherine Holland Davis.

He was also preceded in death by one brother, Robert Davis.

Surviving is one nephew, Robert Chris Davis.

Melton-Riddle Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.



Ann Marteeny

Ann Belle Gay Marteeny, 88, of Umatilla, Fla., died Tuesday, May 24, 2005, at her home after a period of declining health.

She was born Dec. 31, 1916, in Phoebus, Va. She was active in the First Methodist Church, having served as church secretary for many years and was active in the Umatilla Women’s Club. In 1975 she moved to Sylva and owned and operated the Country Mouse gift and collectible shop in Dillsboro until her health forced her retirement in 2003. She was a daughter of the late Morris and Maybelle Gay.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Clyde Marteeny; and two brothers, Warren Gay and Robert Gay.

Surviving are two daughters, Melissa Marteeny of the home and Gaynell Amerson of Sylva; three granddaughters; five great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Hospice.



Delsie Cabe

Delsie Cochran Cabe, 88, of Sylva, died Sunday, May 29, 2005.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 31, in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home. Burial was in Wesleyanna Cemetery with the Revs. Loy Kennedy and Dan Stiles officiating.

Pallbearers were Doug Cabe, Russell Dalrymple, Doyle Dalrymple, Jeff Mills, Jamie Barlow, Frankie Cabe, Tim Frady and Timothy Frady.

She was a native of Jackson County and had worked as a custodian for the Jackson County School System for many years. She enjoyed gardening and was a member of Wesleyanna United Methodist Church. She was a daughter of Callie Wilson and William K. Cochran.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Lee Cabe, who died in 1990; one son, James R. Cabe; two brothers, George and Warren Cochran; and one sister, Hazel Bryson.

Surviving are two daughters, Peggy Fouts of Sylva and Carolyn Dalrymple of Franklin; one sister, Bessie Cabe of Sylva; seven grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.



Beverly Harbol

Beverly Miller Harbol, 54, of Dixie Lane, Sylva, died Monday, May 30, 2005, at her residence after a period of declining health.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 3, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with Father O’Neal officiating. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. today (Thursday, June 2) at the funeral home. Burial will be in Parris Cemetery.

A native of Queens, N.Y., she had lived in Jackson County for the last two years. She was a daughter of Helen Miller of Boynton Beach, Fla., and the late Bernard Miller.

He was also preceded in death by one grandson.

Surviving are one daughter, Rachel of Long Island, N.Y.; two stepdaughters, Amber Chodak of Whittier and Michele Harbol of Bryson City; three sons, Frank and William Saccone, both of Whittier, and Ralph Saccone of West Palm Beach, Fla.; one sister, Karen Ryan of Wellington, Fla.; one brother, Russell Miller of Florida; and six grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the family.



Willie Hayes

Willie Carl Hayes, 78, of Skyland Care Center, Sylva, died Monday, May 30, 2005, at Harris Regional Hospital after a period of declining health.

Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 1, in Old Savannah Cemetery with the Revs. Sherrill Ammons and Curtis Watson officiating.

A native of Tift County, Ga., he had lived in Jackson County for most of his life. He worked at Hennessee Lumber Company and was a member of Black Mountain Baptist Church. He was a son of the late Early Andrew and Dora Belle Tucker Hayes.

He was also preceded in death by his wife, Betty Jean Wykle Hayes, who died in 1999; one daughter, Janet Hayes; and two brothers.

Surviving are two daughters, Carlleen Cecero of Sylva and Margaret Bumgarner of Cullowhee; two sons, J.R. Hayes of Cashiers and Kenneth Hayes of Franklin; one sister, Shirley Watson of Tifton, Ga.; two brothers, Roy and Troy Hayes, both of Tifton; three grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Melton-Riddle Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.



Dorse Webb

Dorse Dean Webb, 58, of Norcross, Ga., died Wednesday, May 18, 2005, at his residence.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Saturday, May 21, in the chapel of R.T. Patterson Funeral Home with the Rev. Eddie Stillwell officiating. Burial was in White Chapel Memorial Gardens in Duluth, Ga.

He was born in Sylva and was a son of Lila Webb Coggins and the late Hayes Lee Webb.

Surviving in addition to his mother are his wife, Isebelle Puerto Webb; one son, Austin Webb of the home; two stepsons, Jeffery and Jason Puerto, both of the home; two daughters, Deanna Baker and Linda Baker; two sisters, Dixie Fish of Eatonton, Ga., and Phyllis Gibson of Sylva; one brother, Curtis Webb of Sylva; and three grandchildren.



Robert Bird

Robert Travis Bird, 23, of Cherokee, died Sunday, May 29, 2005, at Cherokee Indian Hospital.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 1, at Cherokee United Methodist Church. Burial was in Lee Bird Cemetery.

A native of Jackson County, he was a former employee of Tribal Bingo. He was a son of Penny Bird and Robert “Hoss” Tramper, who survive.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Lee Bird and Annie Tramper.

Surviving in addition to his parents are one son, Kolton Travis Bird of South Carolina; one daughter, Kelsey Ann Bird of Canton; three brothers, Dewey Tramper, Eric Bird and Adrian Gomez, all of Cherokee; and one sister, Adriana Gomez of Cherokee.

Moody Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.



Bill McKnight

Memorial services for William “Bill” Ralph McKnight, 54, of Cullowhee, who died Sunday, May 15, 2005, will be held at 5:30 p.m. today (Thursday, June 2) in the Canterbury House of St. David’s Episcopal Church in Cullowhee with the Rev. Michael Hudson officiating.
