Developers propose post office on Railroad Avenue - While it’s been assumed by some for several years now that a new Sylva post office will go in at Jackson Plaza Shopping Center, two developers who visited Sylva leaders May 19 had a different idea. Herald offices to close for Memorial Day - The Sylva Herald offices and printing plant will be closed on Monday, May 30, in observance of the Memorial Day holiday. All news deadlines for the June 2 edition will be noon on Friday, May 27. Display advertising deadline will remain noon on Tuesday, May 31. Classified and real estate ads, normally due at noon Monday, will need to be received by noon on Friday, May 27.

Three county high schools schedule graduation exercises - One-hundred-ninety-six seniors will be candidates for graduation from Jackson County’s public schools in ceremonies for Smoky Mountain High School, Blue Ridge School and the School of Alternatives in the next week. School principals and Superintendent Sue Nations will award diplomas to graduates. Seniors will walk the stage in Western Carolina University’s Hoey Auditorium for the School of Alternatives’ ceremony on Friday, May 27. SMHS graduates will toss their caps in the Ramsey Center at a 7 p.m. event....

Taylor captured the image near her Whittier home last year. Herald Publisher Jim Gray, assisted by newspaper staff members, judged this year’s 80-plus entries, and Herald graphic designer Nick Breedlove was contest coordinator. Budget, time constraints cause delays in SMHS construction - After debating how to deal with changes in the proposed cost and the schedule of planned construction at Smoky Mountain High School, county officials decided Monday (May 23) to send the project back to the drawing board.
