Vinnie Marr
Vinnie Martin Marr, 98, of the Brush Creek community in Swain County, died Wednesday, May 11, 2005.
Funeral services were held Saturday, May 14, at Brush Creek Baptist Church, of which she was a member and Sunday school teacher for more than 50 years, with the Rev. Jim Cochran officiating. Burial was in Tabor Cemetery.
A native of Jackson County, she graduated from Asheville Normal Teachers’ College and received a master’s degree from Western Carolina University. She retired from the Swain County School System after teaching for more than 40 years. She was an active member of the Eastern Star and a volunteer with Franklin’s Angel Hospital, with more than 5,000 hours of service. She was a daughter of the late Julius Lee Martin and Aleka Bradburn Martin.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Lambert Marr, who died June 28, 2000; and two sisters, Bessie Martin Reagan and Nina Martin Cordell.
Surviving are six nieces and nephews, including Bette Jeanne Reagan and Myrtha Reagan Wilson, both of Sylva.

Myrtle Smith
Myrtle Ellen Smith, 92, of Sylva, formerly of Newport News, Va., died Friday, May 13, 2005, at Mountain Trace Nursing Center after a period of declining health.
Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 18, at Peninsula Memorial Park.
A native of Reedsville, W.Va., she lived on Virginia’s peninsula for 53 years before moving to North Carolina in 1986. She was a former member of Morrison Methodist Church in Newport News, a housewife, and enjoyed gardening and crocheting.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer F. Smith, who died in 1986; and one daughter, Myrtle Frances Smith.
Surviving are three sons, E. Franklin Smith Jr. of Longmont, Colo., James E. Smythe of Sylva and John W. Smith of Moore, S.C.
Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s/Dementia Care Unit at Mountain Trace Nursing Center, 417 Mountain Trace Rd., Sylva, N.C. 28779.

Helen Rapert
Helen Rapert of Cullowhee, died Monday, May 16, 2005, at Britthaven Nursing Center.

Annie Giles
Annie Vee Buchanan Giles, 82, of Canton, died Thursday, May 12, 20005, at Canton Christian Convalescent Center.
Graveside services were held at 4 p.m. Saturday, May 14, at New Savannah Baptist Church Cemetery.
She was a native of Jackson County, but had lived most of her life in Haywood County. She was a daughter of the late Dewey Cole and Iris Morgan Buchanan.
She was also preceded in death by one sister, Nellie Buchanan; and two brothers, Raymond and Arthur Buchanan.
Surviving are two daughters, Frankie Norman of Kings Mountain and Glesma Giles of Gastonia; one son, Monroe Giles of California; three brothers, Luther Buchanan of Chesapeake, Va., J.D. Buchanan of Gastonia and Thomas Buchanan of Clover, S.C.; and seven grandchildren.

Geneva Cabe Stepp, of East Fork Road, Sylva, died Tuesday, May 17, 2005, at Harris Regional Hospital.

Eva Ammons
Eva Brown Prince Ammons, 80, of Canada Road, Tuckasegee, died Friday, May 13, 2005, at Harris Regional Hospital after a brief illness.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 17, at Cedar Baptist Church, of which she was a member and secretary, with the Revs. Jim Ed Powell, Carl Adams and Sherrill Ammons officiating. Burial was in Shook Cemetery.
Pallbearers Alden Middleton, Virgil Brown, Larry Stephens, Darrell Talley, Scott Henry, Joseph Riley and Danny Brown.
A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she enjoyed cooking, preserving food, quilting and gardening. She was retired from the Tuckasegee Post Office. She was a daughter of the late Ira and Lillie Mae Shook Brown.
She was also preceded in death by her husbands, J.E. Prince and Don Ammons; one stepson, Clifford Ammons; one grandson; four sisters; and two stepgrandsons.
Surviving are one daughter, Glenda Prince Johnson of Washington; three stepdaughters, Kathleen Ensley and Helen Bryson, both of Sylva, and Mary Jo Harris of Tuckasegee; two sons, Wayne Prince and Joel Prince, both of Concrete, Wash.; one stepson, Carnell Ammons of Tuckasegee; one sister, Annie Faye Broom of Hamilton, Wash.; four grandchildren; 10 stepgrandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; 10 stepgreat-grandchildren and two stepgreat-great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to the Cedar Baptist Church or the Shook Cemetery.

Bessie Owen
Bessie Galloway Owen, 80, of the Balsam Grove community, died Monday, May 16, 2005, at her residence.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday, May 19) at Woods Memorial Baptist Church, of which she was a member, with the Revs. Dan McCall and Frank Dockery officiating. The family was scheduled to receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, May 18, at Moody-Connolly Funeral Home. Burial will be in Woods Cemetery.
She was a native of Jackson County and a daughter of the late Milas and Olevia Bowen Galloway.
She was also preceded in death by one granddaughter.
Surviving are her husband of 64 years, Frank Owen; one son, Grady C. Owen of Pisgah Forest; one brother, Junior Galloway of Sylva; one sister, Mae Owen of Brevard; one granddaughter; two great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.
Geneva Wall
Geneva Wall, 91, of Joe Wilkey Road, Sylva, died Tuesday, May 10, 2005, in Huntersville Oaks Nursing center in Huntersville after a period of declining health.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 13, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Rev. Jim Ed Powell officiating. Burial was in Queen-Connor Cemetery.
A native of Jackson County where she had lived most of her life, she was a member of Long Branch Baptist Church. She was a daughter of the late Henry and Dovie Cunningham Connor.
She was also preceded in death by one son, Jerry Milam; four brothers; and three sisters.
Surviving are two daughters, Joni Stephens of Charlotte and Toni Grigg of Huntersville; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Gertrude Buchanan
Gertrude W. Buchanan, 95, of Berry Mountain Road, Sylva, died Tuesday, May 10, 2005, at Mountain Trace Nursing Center after a period of declining health.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 14, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Revs. Eddie Stillwell, Ray McCall and Josh Hyde officiating. Burial was in Fairview Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers were James R. Buchanan, Alex Buchanan, Bill Conant, Haig Rudd, Greg Bryson, Johnny Lewis, Sam Jay, Bob Wooten and Johnny Rhodes.
Honorary pallbearers were Jerry Fullbright, Carroll Buchanan, James C. Buchanan, James Roper, Marc Hawk and Davis Buchanan.
A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she was a member of Webster Baptist Church for more than 80 years and had served as a Sunday school teacher. She was a daughter of the late William A. and Cora Mashburn Wooten.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Burke H. Buchanan, who died in 1977; three brothers, Homer, Logan and Dennis Wooten; one grandson; and two great-grandchildren.
Surviving are three daughters, Audrey LaSante of Fredricksburg, Va., and Gretchen Leatherwood and Myrtice Brooks, both of Sylva; two sons, David T. Buchanan of Fredricksburg and Gordon J. Buchanan of Waynesville; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
Ruby Bennett
Ruby Amelia Kinne Bennett, 75, of Franklin, died Wednesday, May 11, 2005, after a battle with leukemia.
Funeral services will be held at a later date in Monterey, Mass.
She was born July 25, 1929, in Poughkepsie, N.Y. She was raised in Monterey and lived in Florida for many years before moving to Franklin. She was active in the American Rabbit Breeders Association for more than 20 years and helped start several people in raising and showing rabbits. She was a daughter of the late Ellen Daley Kinne and Clarence Chester Kinne.
She was also preceded in death by one sister, Mildred Walsh.
Surviving are one sister, Lena Pedersen of Monterey; one son, Mark (Wes) Bennett of Pittsfield, Mass.; one daughter, Janet Amelia Smith of Franklin; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
