Stella Bennett
Stella Mae Bennett, 84, of Smith Street, Sylva, died Thursday, May 5, 2005, at her residence after an extended illness.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 7, at East LaPorte Baptist Church, of which she was a member, with the Revs. Eddie Stillwell and Clifford Parker officiating. Burial was in Hooper Cemetery.
Pallbearers were her grandsons.
A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she retired from Kentucky Fried Chicken as a cook. She was a daughter of the late William McKinney and Sarah Jane Bryson Bennett.
She was also preceded in death by one daughter, Eddie Marie Gibson; one sister; four brothers; and one grandson.
Surviving are three daughters, Elizabeth Charleen Bennett of the home, Patsy Shook of Cullowhee and Kathleen Webster of Sylva; three sons, David Bennett, Woody Bennett and John Daniel Bennett, all of Sylva; two sisters, Carolyn Woolvin of Virginia and Bessie Edith Bennett of Cullowhee; one brother, William Bennett Jr. of Cullowhee; 17 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.

Mary Nell Brooks
Mary Nell Stephens Brooks of Rockdale Road, Whittier, died Tuesday, May 10, 2005, after a long battle with cancer.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, May 13, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Rev. Clemmey Queen officiating. The family will receive friends for two hours prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will be in Holden/Wall Cemetery.
She was a native of Jackson County where she lived most of her life. She was a 1954 graduate of Cullowhee High School and a member of Cullowhee Baptist Church. She had worked at Skyland Textile and Hooper’s Mini Market in Cullowhee. She was a daughter of the late Charlie and Estella Phillips Stephens.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Billy Brooks; one son, Michale Holden; four brothers, Kenneth, Durward, Bill and Dan Stephens.
Surviving are one daughter, Debbie Holden Condon of Buford, Ga.; one son, Steve Holden of Minot, N.D.; one stepdaughter, Brenda Mathis of Tuckasegee; two sisters, Fannie Roper of Webster and Shirley Hamilton of Brevard; three brothers, Harry Stephens, Dave Stephens and Ed Stephens, all of Sylva; six grandchildren; and two stepgrandchildren.

Wade Palmer
Wade Palmer, 80, of Rabbit Skin Road, Waynesville, died unexpectedly Saturday, May 7, 2005, at his residence.
Graveside services were held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 10, in Liberty Baptist Church Cemetery with the Revs. Jerry Nelson and Millard Grant officiating.
Pallbearers were his nephews.
A native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, he was a retired carpenter. He was a son of the late William and Clem Jolly Palmer.
He was also preceded in death by four sisters, Jessie, Frances, Edith and Thelma; and one brother, Frank.
Surviving is one sister, Susie Franklin of Waynesville.
Memorials may be made to Liberty Baptist Church Cemetery Fund.

Pearison Henry
Pearison W. Henry, 81, of Spicewood Valley Road, Sylva, died Thursday, May 5, 2005, at Skyland Care Center after a period of declining health.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 7, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Revs. Earl Holden, Jack Robinson and Frank Brooks officiating. Burial was in Fairview Memorial Gardens with military rites being conducted by the William E. Dillard American Legion Post #104.
Pallbearers were Harold Henry, Jermy Martin, Britt Parton, Terry Mills, Dalyn Webb, Keith Henry and Jimmy Henry.
A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he was a member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church where he had been a Sunday school teacher, Sunday school superintendent and deacon. He retired from Dayco with 31 years of service and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a son of the late Harry and Ethel Hill Henry.
Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Louise Fisher Henry; two daughters, Barbara Sluder and Teresa Henry both of Sylva; one son, Benny Henry of Sylva; one sister, Willa Mae Mills of Waynesville; three brothers, Everette Henry and Robert Henry, both of Sylva, and Danny Henry of Clyde; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Gertrude W. Buchanan, 95, of Berry Mountain Road, Sylva, died Tuesday, May 10, 2005, at Mountain Trace Nursing Center.

Howard Nicholson
Howard P. Nicholson, 49, of Cullowhee, died Monday, May 9, 2005, at Harris Regional Hospital.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday, May 12) at Tuckasegee Wesleyan Church with the Revs. Larry Bryson and Jeff Powell officiating. The family was scheduled to receive friends Wednesday, May 11, from 7-9 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home. Burial will be in Wike Cemetery with the Rev. Avery Brown officiating.
A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he was a son of the late Manuel and Mary Genevive Moody Nicholson.
He was also preceded in death by two brothers, David and Tim Nicholson; and one sister, Peggy Nicholson Hatcher.
Surviving are five brothers, Bobby and Hutt Nicholson, both of Sylva, Jimmy Nicholson of Long Beach, Calif., and Andy and Ronnie Nicholson, both of Cullowhee; and three sisters, Ginger Lovedahl of Dillsboro, and Louise Ball and Ann Bryson, both of Cullowhee.

Annie Buchanan
Annie M. Buchanan, 91, of Sylva’s Greens Creek community, died Saturday, May 7, 2005, at Harris Regional Hospital after a period of declining health.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, May 9, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Revs. John Kinsland and Harry Vance officiating. Burial was in Old Savannah Baptist Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Ray Buchanan, Lyle Hall, Anthony Henson, R.L. McMahan, Dan Buchanan and Justin Roper.
A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she retired from C.J. Harris Hospital in the housekeeping department. She was one of the oldest members of Greens Creek Baptist Church and enjoyed quilting and housekeeping. She was a daughter of the late Arch and Doshia Beasley McMahan.
She was also preceded in death by her husbands, Elsie Buchanan and Grady Buchanan; one twin brother, Charlie McMahan and one brother, Adam McMahan; and five sisters, Mamie, Clearsie, Elsie, Jensy, and Letha.
Surviving are one stepdaughter, Linda Buchanan of Sylva; one brother, George McMahan of Sylva; and three stepgrandchildren.
Rose Ingraham
Rose G. Ingraham, 90, of Stone Wall Road, Whittier, died Monday, May 9, 2005, at the home of her daughter, Nancy Nichols, after a period of declining health.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 14, at Ochre Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. Johnny Norris officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers will be her son and grandsons.
She was a native of Hudson Falls, N.Y., and had lived in Jackson County since October 2004. She attended Ochre Hill Baptist Church and enjoyed knitting, gardening, reading and working crossword puzzles. She was a daughter of the late Elijah Andrew and Alice Latham Guyette.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth E. Ingraham, who died in October 2004; two daughters, Betty and Salley Anne; one son, Roger; one sister, Dorothy; and one brother, Arthur.
Surviving are two daughters, Nancy Nichols of Whittier and Carla J. Gilman of Pageland, S.C.; three sons, Terry K. Ingraham of Orlando, Fla., Thomas E. Ingraham of Toccoa, Ga., and Keith A. Ingraham of Pageland; one brother, Robert Guyette of Trantham, N.H.; 26 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
