County leaders hear draft range ordinance
By Derek Hodges
Jackson County Commissioners got their first look Monday (May 9) at a draft ordianance dealing with shooting ranges.
At the request of Commissioner Joe Cowan the issue was brought up in a special meeting of the board.
County planner Linda Cable presented the draft that was developed by members of the planning board during their meeting on Thursday, May 5.
“(Planning board members) are offering this ordinance with resignation about the lack of time we had to discuss it,” Cable said.
Planning board members had one week to set up the draft, given Cowan’s request.
Included in the proposal is protection for individuals shooting on private lands. Board members included phrasing that said the ordinance would, “not otherwise apply to the general discharge of firearms or the use of bows and arrows in accordance with all other applicable laws and regulations.”
Protection is also given to fund-raisers organized by non-profit organizations, such as turkey shoots or night hunts, Cable said.
Commissioners are likely to schedule a meeting to hear public comment on the proposed ordinance during their 6 p.m. meeting Monday, May 16.
