Local officials support regional airport - Jackson County leaders voted unanimously Monday (May 2) to continue toward establishing a regional airport in partnership with Macon County. Commissioners in March asked Rep. Phil Haire (D-Sylva) to introduce legislation in the N.C. General Assembly to allow the creation of a regional airport authority by Jackson and Macon counties, which Haire did in a bill introduced March 23....


SCC to graduate 363 in two Friday ceremonies - Southwestern Community College will see the largest graduating class in its 40-year history Friday, May 6, when 363 students walk across the stage in Myers Auditorium in two commencement ceremonies.  Students from the Health Sciences and Arts and Sciences divisions will graduate at 4 p.m. and those from the Career Technologies Division will receive their Associate of Applied Science degrees, Associate in Arts degrees, diplomas and certificates at 7:30 p.m. “We have outgrown the ability to have just one commencement....


Local man is killed in late-night accident - A Sylva man died late last Thursday night (April 28) from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Eddie Hodgins, 33, of Webster Road, was pronounced dead at the scene of the wreck on S.R. 1360 (Mockingbird Lane), Sgt. Greg Christopher of the N.C. Highway Patrol said. According to a report filed by Trooper Derek Robinson, Hodgins was traveling south on 1360 in a 1997 Geo around 11 p.m. when the vehicle crossed the center....
