Prominent Sylva surgeon, El Bayadi, is dead at 70
Dr. Nagui R. El Bayadi, 70, of Sylva, died Saturday, April 30, 2005, at his residence.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday, May 5) at First United Methodist Church with Father Michael Jones officiating. The family was scheduled to receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, May 4, at Moody Funeral Home. Burial will be in Fairview Memorial Gardens.
A native of Cairo, Egypt, he had been a resident of Sylva for the last 36 years. He received his medical education from Ain-Shams University in Cairo and completed a one year internship and two years as a surgical resident at the university hospital. He was in Senior House Office in surgery at St. Mary’s Hospital in Isle of Wright, England, and was a resident in plastic surgery in Salisbury, England.
After coming to the United States, he completed an internship at the Internship Graduate Hospital at the University of Pennsylvania and a surgical residency at the VA Hospital in Baltimore, Md., where he served as chief resident.
In 1969, he moved to Sylva, where he practiced medicine for 32 years, specializing in surgery. During his practice he was on the surgical staff, served as post chief of the department of surgery and post chief of staff at Harris Regional Hospital.
He was a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh 1963, the American College of Surgeons 1972, and the American Society of Abdominal Surgeons 1973, and an associate fellow of the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery. He was an associate member of the British Association of Plastic Surgeons 1964 and the American Academy of Liposuction Surgery since 1988, and a member of the N.C. Medical Society since 1969, the Jackson County Medical Society since 1969, the InterAmerican Society of Cosmetic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery 1990 and the American Society of Liposuction Surgery 1987. He was licensed in New York in February 1966 and was board certified by the American College of Surgeons in 1980.
He was also a member of the Sylva Rotary Club, the Town and College Club and the Southwestern Community College Foundation. He was a senior warden of the St. Johns Vestry Church in Sylva.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Mounira Tadros Michail; his father, Rizk G. El Bayadi; and two brothers.
Surviving are his wife, Marion Openshaw El Bayadi; two daughters, Karen M. Tharp of Austin, Texas, and Sandra Lyn Wade of Sylva; and two grandchildren.

Edward Giles
Edward Ray Giles, 74,of Young Harris, Ga., died Friday, April 29, 2005, in Murphy Medical Center.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 1, at the Old Brasstown Baptist Church, of which he was a member, with the Rev. Billy Stiles officiating. Burial was in Many Forks Baptist Church Cemetery with military honors by the North Georgia Honor Guard.
Pallbearers were Daniel Giles, Ray Giles, Steve Britt, Roger Owenby, Jerry Ivey and Donnie Ledford.
He was born Aug. 25, 1930, in Union County, Ga., and was a member of VFW 7807 Garrett-Owenby Post. He was a son of the late Garmon and Minnie Giles.
He was also preceded in death by his wife, Stella Dockery Giles; two sons, Carl Owenby and Terry Giles; one daughter, Phyllis Giles; and two brothers, Roy John Giles and J.M. Herbert.
Surviving are two daughters, Vickie Buchanan of Dillsboro and Tammy Wiggins of Young Harris; two sons, Larry Owenby of Young Harris and Roger Giles of Gainesville, Ga.; 17 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.

Peggy McClure
Peggy Dillard McClure, 59, of Old Settlement Road, Sylva, died Sunday, May 1, 2005, at Harris Regional Hospital after a period of declining health.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 4, at New Hope Baptist Church with the Revs. Mike Moore and Earl Holden officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers were Ronnie Bryson, L.G. Painter, Toby Painter, Richard Frady, Tim Crowe, Brad Stillwell and Steve McClure.
Honorary pallbearers were deacons of the church and Tom McClure.
She was a native and lifelong resident of Jackson County and a 1964 graduate of Sylva-Webster High School. She retired from Southwestern Community College as director of financial aid. She was a member of New Hope Baptist Church, where she was secretary of the Sunday school, outreach person and a choir member. She was a daughter of the late Cecil and Margaret Vance Dillard.
She was also preceded in death by an infant brother, Bobby Joe Dillard.
Surviving are her husband of five years, William “Bill” McClure; one stepson, Jim McClure of Sylva; three sisters, Audrey Dean, Nell Davis and Betty Sutton, all of Sylva; two brothers, Bill Dillard and Arthur Dillard, both of Sylva; two stepgrandchildren; and three stepgreat-grandchildren.

Nora Peters
Nora Pearl Peters, 74, of Nicholson Cove Road, Cullowhee, died Tuesday, May 3, 2005, at Harris Regional Hospital.
Memorial services will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, May 6, at LifeWay Community Church, of which she was a member.
She was a native of Akron, Ohio, and had lived in Jackson County for several years. She was a founder of the Jackson County Bible Club. She enjoyed gardening, hiking and reading.
Surviving are her husband, Howard Peters; four sons, John Allan of Tampa, Fla., George Allan of Jacksonville, Fla., Brad Allan of Norton, Ohio, and Bruce Peters of Akron; one daughter, Laurie Peters of Richfield, Ohio; one brother, Cliff Dilbeck of Akron; 12 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Evelyn Beam
Evelyn Letha Beam, 81, died Thursday, March 17, 2005, in Everett, Wash., after a period of declining health.
Memorial services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, March 21, at Everett Bible Baptist Church. Dr. Ronald Storz officiated.
She was born March 9, 1924, in Whittier, and worked in cotton mills as a child. She married Clarence Beam in 1945 and the couple later moved to Washington. She was a daughter of the late Rev. Roy and Maggie Jones Green.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, who died in 1991; three brothers, David J. Green, Earl S. Green and Gentry J. Green; and two sisters, Eva Gates and Ruby Rayfield.
Surviving are three daughters, Victoria Lorette of Sacramento, Calif., Jessica Pratt of Mount Lake Terrace, Wash., and Terry Poole of Everett; one son, Waymon Beam of Everett; five sisters, Beulah Littrell of Arlington, Wash., Kathleen Gunter of Wapato, Wash., Pauline Jones of Darrington, Wash., Jheri Wood of Morganton and Eula Brooks of Dillsboro; three brothers, Bufford Green of Arlington, Cornelius Green and Felix Green, both of Darrington; six grandchildren; and four great-granddaughters.
Gilbert Crowe
Gilbert Crowe, 67, of Cherokee’s Big Y community, died Tuesday, April 26, 2005, at Duke University Medical Center.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 29, at Antioch Baptist Church, of which he was the last deacon and Sunday school teacher, with the Rev. Denny Crowe and Danny Little officiating. Burial was in Crowe Family Cemetery.
Pallbearers were his nephews.
A native of Cherokee, he was the son of the late Albert and Regina Welch Crowe. He was co-owner of Crowe’s Barber Shop for 43 years along with his brother, Gene Crowe, He was also a wood carver. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Gene Crowe and Desmond Crowe.
Surviving are his wife of 43 years, Nell Beck Crowe; two sons, Shawn Crowe of Marion and Little Gil Crowe Jr. of Cherokee; three daughters, Robin Swayney and Susie Wolfe, both of Cherokee, and Ashley Crowe of the home; and four grandchildren.

Mable Willis
Mable Ruth Craig Willis, 97, of Marietta, Ga., died Monday, April 25, 2005.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, May 6, in the Hill Family Cemetery with the Rev. Dan Stiles officiating.
She was born Oct. 29, 1907, in Kenta in what was then the Oklahoma Territory. She worked for Southern Bell in Memphis, Tenn., and Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., for 40 years. After retirement she worked for her family’s business, Hill Lighting, for 20 years. She was the oldest of 10 children born to the late William Franklin and Aurora Blakley Craig.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Earl; and one daughter, Elizabeth Hill, who lived in Sylva.
Surviving are two sisters, Mona Lee McGonagill of Memphis and Eva Pearl of California; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

Jayne Roberts
Jayne Roberts, 81, of Cullowhee, died Thursday, April 28, 2005, at Tsali Care Nursing Center after a period of declining health.
Memorial services will be held at Cullowhee Baptist Church, of which she was a member, at a later date.
A native of Omaha, Neb., she was a member of the Jackson County Home Extension and the Senior Center for 14 years. She enjoyed knitting and painting china. She was a daughter of the late Edward and Margaritte Safer Edwards.
She was also preceded in death by one brother, William Edwards.
Surviving are one son, Jan Morrison of Miami, Fla.; two daughters, Susan Watson of Cullowhee and Linda Cantrell of Valdosta, Ga.; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Ammons Sequoyah
Ammons Allen “Sonny” Sequoyah Jr., 72, of the Yellowhill community of Cherokee, died Monday, April 25, 2005, at his residence.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 28, at Bethabara Baptist Church with the Revs. Mitchell Smiley, Noah Crowe and Arthur Locust officiating. Burial was in Yellowhill Cemetery. Pallbearers were members of the Cherokee Fire Department.
A native of Cherokee, he was retired from the Cherokee sanitation department and had been a member of the Cherokee Volunteer Fire Department. He was a member of Big Cove Baptist Church. He was the son of the late Ammons and Kina Ledford Sequoyah.
He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Sarah Biello and Harriett James, and one granddaughter.
Surviving are his wife, Jean R. Sequoyah; three daughters, Gail P. Long, Cheryl Sequoyah and Kelsey Lynn Reed, all of Cherokee; five sons, Allen, Verlin, Henry William, Junior and Waylon Sequoyah, all of Cherokee; one brother, James “Blue Jay” Sequoyah of Cherokee; four sisters, Willie Lucille Postell of Robbinsville, Eleanor “Porky” Bird of Cherokee, Jessie Sequoyah of New Bern and Lou Bowman of Cherokee; 13 grandchildren; and two great-granddaughters.

Phillip Smith
Phillip W. Smith, 61, of Sylva, died Sunday, May 1, 2005, at Duke University Medical Center.
Memorial services will be held at a later date.
He was a native of Bloomington, Ill., and had been a resident of Jackson County for the past 10 years. He worked in auto body repair. He was a son of the late Ora and Naomi Coffman Smith.
Surviving are his wife, Linda Gosnell Smith; one son, Phillip Smith Jr. of Farmer City, Ill.; four daughters, Trudy Smith of Bloomington, Jodi Reynolds of Farmer City, Ill., and Tori Meder and Tynen Pastorius, both of Sylva; 12 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

June Bracken
June Eyre Bracken, 69, of Franklin, died Friday, April 29, 2005, at her residence after a period of declining health.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 7, in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home.
A native of Barrington, N.J., she was a member of St. Johns Episcopal Church for more than 15 years, the Art Association in Franklin and taught art at Pearl Allen Art Gallery for 10 years. She was a daughter of the late Franklin and Nettie Zolotuchin Eyre.
Surviving are one son, Richard E. Bracken of Franklin; two daughters, Laurene Bracken Calhoun of Franklin and Cheryl Bracken Wyatt of Suwanee, Ga.; two sisters, Doris Jane Dennis of Manassas, Va., and Elaine Lois Paul of Little Egg Harbor, N.Y.; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Eddie Hodgins
Eddie Hodgins, 33, of Webster Road, Sylva, died Thursday, April 28, 2005, due to injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
A celebration of his life was held at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 1, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Revs. Mike Fox and Darrell Fox officiating. A private burial will be held at a later date.
A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he was the chef at O’Malley’s and a 1989 graduate of Smoky Mountain High School. He was a student trainer and played football and several other sports. He was a Chicago Bulls fan and enjoyed car racing. He was a member of Locust Field Baptist Church and the son of the late Donald D. and Thelma Wykle Hodgins.
Surviving is one sister, Donna Stephens of Cullowhee.

John Welch
John Edward Welch, 72, of Cherokee’s Birdtown community, died Tuesday, April 26, 2005, at Cherokee Indian Hospital.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 28, in the chapel of Crisp Funeral Home with Ray Kinsland officiating. Burial was in Birdtown Cemetery.
A native of Cherokee, he was retired from Cherokee Tribal Construction. He was a son of the late Jonah and Olive McCoy Welch.
He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Tommy and Thurman Welch.
Surviving are one son, Scott Welch; one daughter, Teri Fuller, two sisters, Inez Soap and Bernice Lambert; three brothers, Kenneth Welch, Terry Welch and Calvin Murphy, all of Cherokee; and one granddaughter.
John Brooks
John Wesley Brooks, 83, formerly of Calvary Church Road, Sylva, died Wednesday, April 27, 2005, at his home in Pulaski, Va.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 30, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Revs. Walter Middleton and Josh Brooks officiating. Burial was in East Fork Cemetery with military rites conducted by the William E. Dillard American Legion Post 104.
Pallbearers were Greg Brooks, Jeff Holden, Bryan Brooks, Todd Holden, Rocky Deitz, Brad Holden, Josh Brooks and Adam Brooks.
A native of Jackson County, where he lived most of his life, he lived in Pulaski, for the past 15 years. He was a retired carpenter, a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a member of Calvary Baptist Church. He was a son of the late Charlie and Lula Cabe Brooks.
He was also preceded in death by his wife, Mary Allison Brooks; two brothers, Claude and Isaac Brooks; and four sisters, Jessie Gibson, Bertha Brooks, Hazel Middleton and Beatrice Brooks.
Surviving are two daughters, Lois Holden of Jasper, Tenn., and Pat Deitz of Sylva; three sons, John Brooks and James Brooks, both of Sylva, and Bruce Brooks of Whittier; two sisters, Viola Crawford Cogdill and Billie Smith, both of Sylva; one brother, Charlie Brooks of Whittier; 11 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Freida Henry
Freida Paulette Jones Henry, 46, of Balsam, died Monday, May 2, 2005, at Harris Regional Hospital.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday, May 5) at Trinity Baptist Church with the Revs. David Hoyle and Mike Cogdill officiating. The family was scheduled to receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, May 4, at Garrett Funeral Home. Burial will be in Middleton Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Clay Cogdill, Jeff Crawford, James Davis, Lawrence Davis, Mike Cogdill and Benny Henry.
She was born on May 30, 1958, in Haywood County and was a member of Trinity Baptist Church. She enjoyed painting, reading, attending church and visiting the beach. She was a daughter of Lillian Jones of Balsam and the late Robert Martin Jones.
In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Tanya Elizabeth Henry; and one brother, Rex Alfred Jones.
Surviving in addition to her mother are her husband, Steve Henry; and one sister, Lisa Cogdill of Sylva.
