Obituary Information

The Sylva Herald prints obituaries free of charge as a service to its readers.

When possible, obituaries should be submitted to The Herald from the funeral home in charge of arrangements. Information received will be printed in our standard obituary format. As is the case with all information submitted to The Herald, we reserve the right to edit obituary information to fit our standard format.

We publish names of the deceased's children; we also include the number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We do not include in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews or special friends.

Included in a brief history of the deceased is items such as their employment, professional, civic, community and religious affiliations. We omit personal tributes.

To publish a more detailed obituary or one in another format, the announcement can run as a paid advertisement.

Allen Taylor

Allen Cooper Taylor, 69, of Allen Taylor Road, Franklin, died Tuesday, April 19, 2005, at his residence.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 21, in the chapel of Bryant Funeral Home with the Rev. Lewis Smith officiating. Burial was in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Pallbearers were members of the Junaluska Lodge.

He was a native of Macon County, a retired mechanic for CR Industries and also worked in construction. He was a son of the late Allen and Dixie Pendergrass Taylor.

He was also preceded in death by one brother, Furman Taylor.

Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Frankie Allene Henry Taylor; two daughters, Sharon Kay Taylor and Judy Taylor Chapman, both of Franklin; two sons, Perry Allen Taylor and Tony Lee Taylor, both of Franklin; three sisters, Gracie Lee Coggins and Lavada Ledford, both of Franklin, and Dollie Patillo of Smyrna, Ga.; two brothers, James Homer Taylor of Lorain, Ohio, and Samuel Thomas Taylor of Franklin; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Friends of the Greenway in Franklin.

Bryant Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Frankie Griffin

Frankie A. Griffin, 84, of Cherokee, died Tuesday, April 26, 2005, at her residence.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 29, at Bethabara Baptist Church with the Revs. Richard Sneed and James “Bo” Parris officiating. The family will receive friends at 5 p.m. today (Thursday, April 28) at the church. Burial will be in Birdtown Cemetery.

A native of Cherokee, she had been a cook at the Tee Pee Restaurant for 30 years. She enjoyed bingo and was a member of Qualla Arts and Crafts. She was a daughter of the late Frank and Daisy Younce Griffin.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Riley Griffin; four sons, Henry, Richard, Frank and Kenny Griffin; one daughter, Regina Griffin; and two sisters, Nola Lambert and Ima McCoy.

Surviving are two sons, Dino and Lee Bo Griffin, both of Cherokee; one sister, Iowa Frankiewicz of Cherokee; 10 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Moody Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Callie Ciccarello

Callie Lee Ciccarello, 88, of Cullowhee, died Wednesday, April 20, 2005, at Mountain Trace Nursing Center.

Memorial services will be held at a later date.

She was a native of Hillsborough, Fla., and was a homemaker. She was a daughter of the late Hazen and Callie Penn Kirk.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Sam Ciccarello, who died in 1981.

Surviving are two sons, Ralph Lee Ciccarello of Tampa, Fla., and Ross M. Ciccarello of Orlando, Fla.; one sister, Julia Plues of Montgomery, Ala.; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Winnie Taylor

Winnie Mae Taylor, 69, of Gastonia, died Sunday, April 17, 2005.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, April 20, at Charity Independence Baptist Church with the Revs. Emory Beaver and Don Ballew officiating. Burial was in Gaston Memorial Park.

She was born May 17, 1935, in Dillsboro to the late Thomas and Cora Gates Lawing.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Ross G. Taylor; 11 sisters; and one brother.

Surviving are four daughters, Cathy Bazzle of the home, and Lynda McKinney, Robin Edison and Debra Fulbright, all of Gastonia; one son, Steve Taylor of Dallas; 12 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Genevieve Thurston

Genevieve Taintor Thurston, 77, of Hidden Valley Road, Sylva, died Saturday, April 23, 2005, at her residence after a period of declining health.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 27, at Scotts Creek Baptist Church, of which she was a member, with the Rev. Rich Peoples officiating.

She was a native of Mount Vernon, S.D., and had lived in Jackson County since 1995. She was a retired title clerk with an auto agency and a volunteer with REACH of Jackson County and Relay for life. She was a daughter of the late D. Edward and Margaret Shuttuck Taintor.

Surviving are her husband of 55 years, Claude Elbert Thurston; two sons, Gary Edward Thurston of the home and Allen Charles Thurston of Sylva; and three grandchildren.

Grover Powell

Grover L. Powell, 71, of Cullowhee, died Monday, April 25, 2005, at Harris Regional Hospital.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, April 29, in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home. The family will receive friends following the service.

He was born Oct. 22, 1933, in Durham, and was a 1953 graduate of Bethesda High School. He was an athlete with the Durham County Counts and semi-pro baseball teams in the area. He joined the 12th Ordinance Battalion of the U.S. Army where he was assigned to the baseball program and served as a military policeman in Germany. He served as a youth league coach in Durham County for baseball, basketball and football, and served as president of the Durham County Rotary Club. He was a driving force in the construction of a community Scout hut in Durham. In 1974, he moved to Cullowhee and was owner of the Townhouse Restaurant on the Western Carolina University campus, Sylva’s Kentucky Fried Chicken and Grandma’s Pancake Barn. He was a supporter of WCU, Jackson County Schools’ athletics programs and the community.

Surviving are his wife, Fay Smith Powell; and one daughter, Leigh Powell Hines.

Edward Klerlein

Edward Thomas Klerlein Jr., 92, of Sylva, formerly of Charlotte, died Thursday, April 21, 2005, at his residence.

A funeral mass was held at 10 a.m. Monday, April 25, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Charlotte, with Father James Cahill officiating. Burial was in Forest Lawn East Cemetery in Matthews.

He was born in Baltimore, Md., on Sept. 10, 1912, and was a veteran of World War II, having served with Military Intelligence in the U.S. Army. He was retired from Barclays American as a vice president in the Consumer Finance Division. He attended the Drexel Institute and played semi-pro football in the Baltimore area. He also flew small planes prior to his time in the military. He volunteered with Meals on Wheels and the American Cancer Society. He was the son of the late Edward Thomas Klerlein Sr. and Carrie Bau Klerlein.

He was also preceded in death by his wife, Eleanor Hagger Klerlein, who died in 1996.

Surviving are one daughter, Pamela K. Wells; one son, Joseph B. Klerlein; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Frank Broom

Frank Dewey Broom, 92, of Frosty Ridge Road, Sylva, died Tuesday, April 26, 2005, at his residence after a brief illness.

Funeral services were held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 27, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Rev. Earl Holden officiating. The family was to have received friends one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at 11 a.m. today (Thursday, April 28) in Broom Cemetery.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he was a retired carpenter and had worked for Chris Burrell. He was a son of the late Samuel Madison and Jane Ashe Broom.

He was also preceded in death by one son, Bill Broom; one daughter, Shirley Shuler; two grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and one great-great-granddaughter.

Surviving are his wife of 70 years, Beaulah Shelton Broom; one daughter, Helen Parker of Sylva; one son, Mike Broom of Sylva; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

Joe Henry

Joe Geisler Henry, 78, of Windcrest Ridge, Sylva, died unexpectedly Sunday, April 24, 2005, at Harris Regional Hospital after a brief illness.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 27, at Sylva First United Methodist Church with the Revs. Paul Christy and Phyllis Glahn officiating. Burial was in Green Hill Cemetery in Waynesville.

Pallbearers were the Methodist Men.

He was a native of Jackson County and, together with his mother, owned and operated Henry Dry Cleaners in Bryson City. He was a long-time member of Sylva First United Methodist Church, where he was part of the Methodist Men, Joy Group, Sunday school secretary and served on the official board. Prior to his illness, he worked as a senior companion through Mountain Projects. He was a daily visitor at the Senior Cafe at the Sylva nutrition site and also participated in the Community Table program. He graduated from Western Carolina University in 1948. He was the son of the late Fred and Mary Geisler Henry.

Surviving are one sister, Mary Bess Shelley of Hamlet.

Glenda Mainess

Glenda Lowe Thompson Mainess, 59, of Lexington, died Saturday, April 23, 2005, at her home.

Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 26, at Forest Hill Cemetery in Lexington with the Rev. Wayne Knight officiating.

She was born Nov. 24, 1945, to the late Clint and Eva Ball Lowe.

Surviving are her husband, Eric Mainess; two sons, Kyle Thompson of Linwood and Terry Thompson of Lexington; three sisters, Shirley Connie, Patty Crotts and Carolyn Lowe, all of Lexington; two stepsons, Scott Mainess and Travis Mainess, both of Charlotte; one stepdaughter, Becky Mainess of Charlotte; four grandchildren; and five stepgrandchildren.

Mable Willis

Mable Willis, of Marietta, Ga., formerly of Sylva, died Monday, April 25, 2005, in a Marietta nursing facility.
