ALL AMERICAN AWARDS is featured this week in our Business Spotlight. The West Sylva Shopping Center store features uniforms, awards, signs, screen-printing and embroidery. See the ad on page 10C for more information.



SUNDAE AFTERNOON, Main Street’s ice cream shop, will be open this weekend, Saturday, April 23, from 11 a.m. until 10 p.m. and Sunday, April 24, from 1 to 8 p.m. Stop by for cones, shakes and 24 flavors of shaved ice.


WEBSTER BAPTIST CHURCH will celebrate its sesquicentennial on Sunday, May 1. The Rev. Ray McCall, a former pastor, will be the guest speaker during the 10:30 a.m. service, and special recognition will be given to former deacons and pastors. Lunch will be at noon, and an afternoon worship and dedication service will begin at 1:15 p.m.


SAVANNAH FIREFIGHTERS will hold their annual fund-raising dinner Saturday, April 30, from 1 until 7 p.m. This year’s menu will feature barbecue, coleslaw, baked beans, garlic toast, drink and dessert at a cost of $6 per plate for adults and $5 for children. Carry-outs will be available.


A PUPPY PHOTO CONTEST will be part of this year’s Saturday, April 30, Greening Up the Mountains downtown festival. Catch the Spirit of Appalachia invites all who love puppies to bring their favorite puppy picture to post on a display board that will be part of the Heritage Walk near Karen’s Restaurant on Main Street. Judges will award first-, second-, and third-place ribbons, and winners will be posted at 4:30 p.m.


MULCH IS AVAILABLE at the Jackson County Transfer Station on Mineral Springs Road. One loader bucket is $10. Hours are from 7:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Saturdays. Call 586-7509 for more information.


CITY LIGHTS will host Teachers Night Tuesday, April 26, at 6 p.m. All teachers and homeschoolers are invited to attend this event, which will highlight new books for children at all grade levels. Posters, advance reading copies, and other materials for classroom use will be available as complimentary door prizes. For more information, call City Lights at 586-9499.


THE PISGAH REVIEW will be launched at City Lights on Saturday, April 23, at 7:30 p.m. This is the inaugural edition of a new literary journal based in Western North Carolina (the brainchild of Western Carolina University’s Jubal Tiner and Charles White) with a focus on Appalachia and the New South. The journal will feature both poetry and fiction in order to further the review’s goal to “move, delight, create and teach.” Local writers featured in the debut issue include Ron Rash, Lonnie Busch and Sarah York. Readers at Saturday’s event will include York, Busch and Stephen Kirbach. A reception will follow the reading. For more information, call the bookstore at 586-9499.


JACKSON HEWITT TAX SERVICE recently held a drawing for a television as the local kickoff event for the national Support Our Troops book drive, and the winner is Harley Buchanan. Books and magazines collected by Jackson Hewitt will be delivered to deployed troops serving overseas.


PREREGISTRATION for public preschool programs begins Monday, April 25. Classes for children who will be 4 years old on or before Oct. 16 are available at both Smokey Mountain Elementary School and Blue Ridge School. Screenings will be held Monday, May 30, through Thursday, June 2, and parents will be notified of preschool placements during the first week in July. To place a child’s name on the list, parents must call Blue Ridge or Smokey Mountain between Monday, April 25, and Friday, May 13.


ZION HILL BAPTIST CHURCH will continue to collect nonperishable items for the Baptist Children’s Homes through April 30. For information on items needed, call the Tuckaseigee Baptist Association office at 586-6011. Zion Hill’s roadside cleanup on April 16 included the church’s youngest member, 8-year-old Chad Webb, and most senior member, 84-year-old Sherri Hunt. Other participants included Ronnie Webb, Ron Elkins, Betsy Phillips, Andy Mashburn, Bob and Gloria Rogers, Roger Turner and Bruce Rish. Volunteers enjoyed a hot dog lunch prepared by Alice Webb and Aquilla Green.


THE SALVATION ARMY’S Shelton Laurel unit in Clyde sent us a note expressing appreciation to everyone who dropped money in their red kettles this past Christmas. In particular, the group wanted to thank Ryan’s, Wal-Mart and the Sylva Post Office for hosting Angel Trees and collecting Christmas presents for needy children and shut-ins.
