Obituary Information

The Sylva Herald prints obituaries free of charge as a service to its readers.

When possible, obituaries should be submitted to The Herald from the funeral home in charge of arrangements. Information received will be printed in our standard obituary format. As is the case with all information submitted to The Herald, we reserve the right to edit obituary information to fit our standard format.

We publish names of the deceased's children; we also include the number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We do not include in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews or special friends.

Included in a brief history of the deceased is items such as their employment, professional, civic, community and religious affiliations. We omit personal tributes.

To publish a more detailed obituary or one in another format, the announcement can run as a paid advertisement.

Astor “Bud” Plemmons Jr., of Falls Circle, Sylva, died Tuesday, April 12, 2005, at his residence after a brief illness.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, April 15, at East Sylva Baptist Church with Gene McConnell, and the Revs. Charles Stephens, Charles Dean and Eddie Stillwell officiating. The family will receive friends from 6-9 p.m. today (Thursday, April 14) at the church. Burial will be in Fairview Memorial Gardens with the Revs. Jim Dean and Harry Vance officiating.

A native of Macon County, he had lived in Jackson County most of his life. He retired from the maintenance department at Western Carolina University, was a volunteer fireman with the Sylva Fire Department and was involved with Habitat for Humanity. He was a member of the “Over the Hill Gang” and East Sylva Baptist Church, which he served for 23 years as treasurer, a Royal Ambassadors leader, Sunday school teacher, chairman of the maintenance committee, a choir member and deacon. He enjoyed wood working. He was a son of the late Astor Sr. and Myrtle Hurst Plemmons.

He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Lawrence Plemmons and J.D. Plemmons; and three sisters, Zella Mae Plemmons, Thelma Snooks Plemmons and Mary Ann Jamison.

Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Velma Hooper Plemmons; one daughter, Sandy Brooks of Waynesville; three sisters, Alma Beasley, Pauline Cope and Naomi Turpin, all of Sylva; and two grandchildren.

Anna Middleton

Anna J. Middleton, 76, of Caney Fork community, died Monday, April 11, 2005, at Skyland Care Center after an extended illness.

Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Friday, April 15, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Rev. Huey Stafford officiating. The Family will receive friends from 6-8:30 p.m. today (Thursday, April 14) at the funeral home. Burial will be in East LaPorte Cemetery.

A native of Arizona, she had lived in Jackson County since 1970. She was a daughter of the late Arthur Earl Smith and Hazel Smith Wooley.

She was also preceded in death by four sisters, Alma Horton, Mertie Totten, Deana Ritz and Francis Lingo; and one brother, Earl Smith.

Surviving are three sons, Earl William Middleton and Richard Allen Middleton, both of Cullowhee, and James Howard Middleton of Sylva; two brothers, Robert Smith and Eddie Smith, both of Colorado; one stepbrother, David Athens of Mt. Shasta, Calif.; and 14 grandchildren.


Pat Coggins

Patricia “Pat” L. Coggins, 72, of Thomas Valley Road, Whittier, died unexpectedly Thursday, April 7, 2005, at Harris Regional Hospital.

Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Sunday, April 10, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Rev. Johnny Ray Davis officiating. A private burial will be held at a later date.

A native of Dayton, Ohio, she moved to Jackson County in 1965. She was a sales clerk for a gift shop and a U.S. Army veteran. She was a daughter of the late Sam Davis and Alice B. Schloss.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Earl D. Coggins Sr., who died in 1982; one brother, Willard Davis; and three sisters, Florence Bowling, Bessie Loney and Jo Ann Patterson.

Surviving are two daughters, Connie Snider of Medford, Ore., and Elizabeth Coggins of the home; three sons, Earl D. Coggins Jr. of Jacksonville, Fla., Richard Allen Coggins of Barkers Creek and Michael P. Coggins of Fayetteville; three brothers, John Kimball and Ralph Kimball, both of Springfield, Ohio, and Joe Kimball of Florida; and two grandchildren.


Essie Moore

Essie Hooper Moore, 91, formerly of Caney Fork community, died Thursday, April 7, 2005, at her daughter’s home in Bryson City after a brief period of declining health.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 10, at Balsam Grove Baptist Church with the Revs. Loyell York, Harry Steele and Mike Moore officiating. Burial was in Brasstown Cemetery with the Rev. Clifford Willis officiating.

Pallbearers were her grandsons.

She was a native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, a homemaker, gardener and canner who enjoyed cooking. She was a survivor of a long line of settlers of Western North Carolina and a lifelong member of Balsam Grove Baptist Church. She was a daughter of the late Henry Bazzle and Grace Cook Hooper.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Alvin H. Moore, who died July 7, 1995; one infant son, Jimmy; one brother, Eathan Hooper; one sister, Agnes H. Lewis; three infant brothers; and one granddaughter.

Surviving are one son, Vance R. Moore of Waynesville; five daughters, Marlene M. Plemmons of Bryson City, Blanche Plemmons of Waynesville, Anna M. Awald of Horse Shoe, and Bessie Moore Barnette and Sue Norman, both of Cullowhee; two brothers, Arnold Hooper of Orifino, Idaho, and Cyrus Hooper of Kamiah, Idaho.; three sisters, Sabra Goodson of Brevard, Zinnie Willis of Sylva and Euadean “Dean” Tuttle of Bryson City; 12 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Brasstown Cemetery Fund, c/o Earl Hooper, 103 Beta Circle Drive, Sylva, N.C. 28779.

Bonnie Wood

Bonnie S. Wood, 61, of Wilson Drive, Sylva, died Wednesday, April 6, 2005, at Harris Regional Hospital.

No services are planned.

A native of Jackson County, she was a daughter of the late Dewitt and Callie Broom Queen.
She was also preceded in death by four sisters.

Surviving are her husband, Robert D. Wood; two sons, Richard D. Wood of Webster and Robert F. Wood of Bristow, Va.; three brothers, Talmadge Queen and Arnold Queen, both of Cullowhee, and Frank Queen of Grand Rapids, Mich.; one sister, Atlas Tart of Cullowhee; and two grandchildren.

The Rev. Chester C. Mitchell, 80, of Skagit County, Wash., died Saturday, April 9, 2005.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. today (Thursday, April 14) at Northwest Missionary Baptist Church, which he founded and pastored, in Hamilton, Wash., with his son, Phil Mitchell, officiating. Burial will be in Hamilton Cemetery.

He was born May 11, 1924, in Haywood County, and was raised near the Allen’s Creek community. He joined the U.S. Army at the age of 16 and was involved in the assault on Normandy Beach. He also served in the U.S. Navy. He married Marie King on March 31, 1945, and the couple lived in Canton. He was ordained in 1950 and pastored churches in Waynesville, Canton and Skagit County. He enjoyed fly fishing, camping and hunting. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion, a member of the National Rifle Association and the International Order of Foresters. He was a son of the late Samuel and Hattie Barnes Mitchell.

He was also preceded in death by his wife, who died in 1995; one son, Gary; five sisters; and two brothers.

Surviving are three sons, Phil Mitchell of Birdsview, Wash., Mike Mitchell of Punkin Center, Wash., and Darryl Mitchell of Sedro-Woolley, Wash.; one daughter, June Queen of Sedro-Woolley; one brother, Glenn Mitchell of Samish Island, Wash.; 15 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Northwest Missionary Baptist Church or to the American Heart Association.

Ruby Owen

Ruby Christine “Granny” McCall Owen, 84, of Zeb Alley Road, Cashiers, died Sunday, April 10, 2005, at Highlands-Cashiers Hospital after a period of declining health.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 13, at Cashiers Church of God, of which she was a member for more than 50 years, with the Revs. Phil Shearer, Ned Pressley and Delbert McCall officiating. Burial was in Upper Zachary Cemetery.

She was born in Pickens County, S.C., and was raised in Jackson County’s Pleasant Grove community. She was a cook at High Hampton Country Club for 26 years and worked in the lunchroom at the old Cashiers School. She enjoyed cooking and flowers. She was a daughter of the late Kirk and Sallie Baumgarner McCall.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Andy Albert Owen, who died in 1972; four sisters, Nannie Crowe, Thelma Stewart, Bertha McCall and Ursilla Teaster; three brothers, Alvis and Clarence McCall and Daniel Teaster.

Surviving are four daughters, Barbara Dean, Laverne Montanez, Theda McCall and Teresa Owen, all of Cashiers; three sons, Neville Andrew Owen of Tuckasegee, Norman Owen of Fletcher and Donnie Owen of Cashiers; one sister, Pauline Grant of Salem, S.C.; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Bessie Hall

Bessie Lee Hall, 76, of Brooks Branch Road, Sylva, died Sunday, April 10, at Mountain Trace Nursing Center after an extended illness.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 13, at Old Savannah Baptist Church, of which she was a member, with the Revs. David Sourderes and Larry Nations officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers were Andrew Queen, Mathew Moore, Brandon Franks, Randy Ashe, Gary Wilkey and Jerry Robinson.

Honorary pallbearers were Woodrow Frady, Mark Barker, Jim Mason, Doug Hall, Ronnie Buchanan, Dannie Hall and Greg White.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she had worked at Buster Brown and Sylco. She was a daughter of the late Hershall and Hattie Buchanan Hall.

She was also preceded in death by one brother, Charlie Crayton Hall.

Surviving is one sister, Lessie Franks of Sylva.

Memorials may be made to Old Savannah Baptist Church.
