Main Street gallery to showcase Ludlow’s digital photographs

It’s by Nature Gallery will host an opening reception for photographer Robert Ludlow’s “Compositions in Color” on Friday, April 15, from 7 to 9 p.m.

“The latest and greatest of my serial passions” is how Ludlow describes his immersion in the art of digital photography and fine-art printing.

“Black-eyed Susans” will be among Robert Ludlow’s digital photographs that will be on display at Main Street’s It’s By Nature Gallery through Saturday, May 14.

Now in his mid-60s, Ludlow’s varied resume includes college psychology instructor throughout the 1970s, education coordinator for a major diabetes center in the 1980s, and fitness and health editor for a national magazine in the 1990s.

The Canton resident describes his photographic interests as eclectic, adding that his favorite subjects are the natural landscapes and historic architecture of Western North Carolina.

“My wife has a summer home at Lake Junaluska where we stayed the first two summers after we married. We both fell in love with the area and made a number of sacrifices so we could live here full time. We have never regretted that decision,” he said, calling the area a “major creative stimulus.”

Asked about the advantages of working in the digital medium, Ludlow said the main advantage is the creative freedom it offers.

“I approach image processing in the spirit of a realist painter. I grant myself license to remove distractions, enhance colors, and sometimes replace entire areas of a scene, such as a drab sky. But I usually limit digital manipulation so the final result remains believable and reasonably faithful to the subject,” he said.

Ludlow admits to getting carried away on occasion and letting his “art techo” impulses get the better of him.

“When you come to my show, be sure to check out the image titled ‘Moontage,’” he said.

That picture, along with many more, will be on display through Saturday, May 14.
