East Henderson nips SM in soccer action
Smoky Mountain’s soccer team returned from its spring break layoff with a 2-1 Mountain Athletic Conference loss Monday at East Henderson.
“I think we came out flat after spring break,” Coach Lyman Whisman said. “I don’t know if our hearts were in it. We’re all making mistakes, even coaching.”

The Lady Mustangs (2-8-1, 1-7) lost despite having an 18-5 advantage in shots.
“We had our chances,” Whisman said. “We need to be more efficient with our opportunities. Defensively, we didn’t put enough pressure on the ball. We played down to our competition.”
Erin Rholl scored the winning goal for the Lady Eagles with about six minutes remaining.
East went up 1-0 at the 18:08 mark on Helen Glenn’s goal.
The Lady Mustangs tied it at the 25-minute mark when Courtney Spaulding scored with an assist from Carrilea Potter.
“Carrilea had a good assist and played the ball in front of the net,” Whisman said. “Courtney had a good finish.”
As for the East goals, the coach said, “We allowed them to get the ball in front of the box and didn’t put pressure on the ball.”
Sam Dudas kept East in the game by making 15 saves.
Laury Brown and Spaulding split keeper duties for SM and had one save apiece.
Whisman noted injuries continue to be a problem as Jordan Youmans missed the game with a broken elbow sustained over spring break.
