‘Tree City’ ceremony to be during festival

041405trees
This year’s Saturday, April 30, downtown Greening Up the Mountains festival will be the occasion when Sylva officially becomes a “Tree City USA.” The ceremony will be during the busiest part of the all-day event, noon, at the Sylva Partners in Renewal booth on Main Street, according to town Manager Richard McHargue. Mayor Brenda Oliver will accept the certification from the N.C. Forest Service’s Jackson County Ranger, he said. The event marking Sylva’s new status will be one of a series of happenings planned for the annual spring festivities, which draw thousands downtown for food, music, contests and a celebration of mountain culture and heritage. The day will begin with a 5K road race and will include Cub Scouts’ cubmobile races as well as the “Ducks on the Tuck” river race that generates funds for New Century Scholars.
