Roberson’s Laughter fires no-hitter at SM
Seth Laughter pitched a no-hitter as Roberson, the nation’s fifth-ranked high school baseball team, routed Smoky Mountain 14-0 in a Mountain Athletic Conference game at Roberson on March 29.
The Rams erupted for 10 runs in the first inning, and the contest was called after four and a half innings due to the 10-run rule.
Laughter walked three and struck out nine.
SM Coach Ron Yount used a different pitcher each inning. Brandon Magruder (2-2) started and took the loss.
“They have a good program going,” Yount said. “They’re successful every year, and we’re trying to get there. I wasn’t going to waste my pitching staff. They’re so skilled it doesn’t matter what kind of pitching you’ve got.”
Roberson set the tone early when Cameron Maybin, projected as the second pick in this year’s Major League Baseball draft, set the tone for the day when he led off the bottom of the first with a home run. Jason Gardner had a two-run single, and Mitch Hefner and Mike McKee both had RBI singles. Another run scored on an error.
The Rams made it 10-0 by scoring four times in the second. Brad Roland singled in a pair, and Clay Roland had an RBI single. The other run came home on an error.
John Ramsey doubled in a run in the third, and Wesley Williams belted a three-run homer in the fourth.
Maybin and Williams both had two hits for the Rams.
SM’s Grant Schallock drew a pair of walks.
Roberson won the JV game, played at the SM field, 17-2. Andy Potter had an RBI single for the Mustangs.
