Obituary Information

The Sylva Herald prints obituaries free of charge as a service to its readers.

When possible, obituaries should be submitted to The Herald from the funeral home in charge of arrangements. Information received will be printed in our standard obituary format. As is the case with all information submitted to The Herald, we reserve the right to edit obituary information to fit our standard format.

We publish names of the deceased's children; we also include the number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We do not include in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews or special friends.

Included in a brief history of the deceased is items such as their employment, professional, civic, community and religious affiliations. We omit personal tributes.

To publish a more detailed obituary or one in another format, the announcement can run as a paid advertisement.

Alex Ray Rogers, 63, of Grayson, Ky., died Wednesday, March 16, 2005, at his residence.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 19, in the chapel of Malone Funeral Home in Grayson with the Revs. David McGranahan and Kenny Floyd officiating. Military rites were performed by Grayson VFW Post 3705.

He was born May 5, 1941, in Jackson County and was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served two tours in Vietnam. He was a power lineman for Pike Electric, a life member and past commander of VFW Post 3705, and a member of the American Legion 345 in Willard, Ky. He was a son of Mary Catherine Buchanan Rogers of Cashiers and the late Virgle Rogers.

He was also preceded in death by one brother, Carl O. Rogers.

Surviving, in addition to his mother, are his wife, Ernestine Cooper Rogers; three sons, Virgil R. Rogers of Coon Rapids, Minn., Michael A. Rogers of Grayson and Alex R. Rogers Jr. of West Liberty, Ky.; one sister, Sally Ruth Rogers Clawson of Cashiers; one brother, William Lee Rogers of Glenville; and five grandchildren.

Nick Andretti

Nick Andretti, 64, of Sylva, died Friday, April 1, at Skyland Care Center.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. today (Thursday, April 7) in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home with Father Shawn O’Neal officiating.

A native of Naples, Italy, he was the owner of Andretti’s Restaurant for many years. He was a son of the late Andrea and Giovnna Teramonto Andretti.

He was also preceded in death by three brothers and one sister.

Surviving are two daughters, Linda Andretti of Sylva and Giovanna Gallagher of Clearwater, Fla.; and two grandchildren.

Mary Smith

Mary Lou Smith, 69, of Cherokee’s Big Cove Community, died Thursday, March 31, 2005, at her residence.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m Saturday,. April 2, at Sequoyah Baptist Church with the Revs. Tim James and Bo Parris officiating. Burial was in Birdtown Cemetery.

She was a native and lifelong resident of Swain County.

Surviving are her husband, James Harvey Smith Sr.; five daughters, Elaine Toinetta, Jessie Garcia, Clara Calhoun, Shirley Swaney and Tiney Reagan, all of Cherokee; two stepsons, James Jr. and Timothy Smith, both of Cherokee; three sisters, Patsy Maney and Julia Griffin, both of Cherokee, and Dorothy Wood of Lexington; 20 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.

Melton-Riddle Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.


Homer Gunter

Homer Thad Gunter, 95, of Camp Creek Road, Whittier, died unexpectedly Monday, April 4, 2005, at his residence.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday, April 7) at Hyatt’s Chapel Baptist Church with the Revs. Dale Roberts, Steve Webb and Mike Moore officiating. Burial will be in Gunter Cemetery.

A native of Swain County, he had lived most of his life in Jackson County. He was one of the oldest members of Hyatt’s Chapel Baptist Church and had served the church as an assistant superintendent. He helped in the maintenance and upkeep of Gunter Cemetery. He was a farmer and carpenter and had worked as a logger for seven years in the state of Washington. He was a son of the late George B. and Julia Crisp Gunter.

He was also preceded in death by six brothers, Zeb, Henry, Oscar, Troy, Gentry and Furman Gunter; three sisters, Zenna Korb, Ollie Bryson and Myrtle Jones.

Surviving are his wife of 66 years, Louphelia Elders Gunter; two daughters, Jolene Gunter of the home and Doris “Dot” Moore of Whittier; one son, Carlos Gunter of Whittier; one sister, Mary Stiles of Sylva; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Hyatt’s Chapel Baptist Church.

Margaret Wood

Margaret Mason Wood, 63, of Mason Street, Dillsboro, died unexpectedly Friday, April 1, 2005, at Harris Regional Hospital.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Monday, April 4, at Jarrett Memorial Baptist Church, of which she was a member, with the Revs. Avery Brown and Cory Boone officiating. Burial was in Parris Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Paige Wood, Heather Wood, Mike Montague, Brody Montague, Kenny Mason and Tony Childress.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she had worked at DOT as a secretary and at one time worked with Lacy Thornburg. She was a teacher and enjoyed ceramics. She was a daughter of the late James and Margaret Cagle Mason.

She was also preceded in death by one son, Richie Wood; two sisters, Dot Dishman and Mary Smith; and two brothers, Charlie and Bill Mason.

Surviving are her husband, Billie Wood; two sons, Gary Wood of Dillsboro, and David Mason of Asheville; two brothers, Jim Mason of Webster and Kenny Mason of Atlanta; and eight grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Parris Cemetery Fund, c/o Roy Shuler, 118 S. Country Club Dr., Cullowhee, NC 28723.

William Campbell

William H. Campbell Jr., 57, of Fresno Lane, Cashiers, died Sunday, April 3, 2005, at his residence.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday, April 7) in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home with the Rev. Larry Bryson officiating.

A native of Dade County, Fla., he was self-employed and enjoyed music and playing the guitar. He was a son of William H. and Natalie Smalley Campbell of Cashiers.

Surviving, in addition to his parents, are two brothers, Ron M. Campbell of Newberry, Fla., and Robert Alan Campbell of Cashiers; and two sisters, Laura Walker of Coral Gables, Fla., and Marguerite Chesney of Palm Beach, Fla.

Judy Reed

Judy Rae Bigmeat Reed, 34, of Cherokee’s Wolftown community, died Saturday, April 2, 2005, at her residence.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 6, at Cherokee Wesleyan Church with the Revs. Patricia Crockett and James “Bo” Parris officiating. Burial was in Oocumma Family Cemetery.

A native of Swain County, she was a member of the Qualla Arts & Crafts Co-op and an artisan in beadwork and handmade crafts. She enjoyed sports, especially basketball, softball and swimming. She also enjoyed attending pow-wows and other cultural events.She was a daughter of John Ray Bigmeat of Cherokee and Marietta Sampson Toineeta of Cherokee.

Surviving, in addition to her parents, are two daughters, Robyn Denise Reed and Sharon Marie Teesatuskie, both of the home; four sons, Samuel Enoch Reed, Spirit Wind Lossiah, Thomas Lyle Lossiah and Little Gary Teesatuskie, all of the home; two brothers, John Robbie Bigmeat of Cherokee and Damion Lyle Toineeta of the home; one stepbrother, Gabe Simcox of Bryson City; one half-sister, Missy Brady Payne of Cherokee; maternal grandmother, Lucinda Sampson of Cherokee; paternal grandmother, Golinda Lambert of Cherokee; and paternal great-grandmother, Margaret S. Ratliff of Cherokee.

Crisp Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Evelyn Letha Beam, 81, died Thursday, March 17, 2005, in Everett, Wash., after a period of declining health.

Memorial services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, March 21, at Everett Bible Baptist Church. Dr. Ronald Storz officiated.

She was born March 9, 1924, in Whittier, and worked in cotton mills as a child. She married Clarence Beam in 1945 and the couple later moved to Washington. She was a daughter of the late Rev. Roy and Maggie Jones Green.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, who died in 1991; three brothers, David J. Green, Earl S. Green and Gentry J. Green; and two sisters, Eva Gates and Ruby Rayfield.

Surviving are three daughters, Victoria Lorette of Sacramento, Calif., Jessica Pratt of Mount Lake Terrace, Wash., and Terry Poole of Everett; one son, Waymon Beam of Everett; five sisters, Beulah Littrell of Arlington, Wash., Kathleen Gunter of Wapato, Wash., Pauline Jones of Darrington, Wash., Jheri Wood of Morganton and Eula Brooks of Dillsboro; three brothers, Bufford Beam of Arlington, Cornelius Beam and Felix Beam, both of Darrington; six grandchildren; and four great-granddaughters.


Annie Robinson

Annie Robinson, 78, of Sylva, died Thursday, March 31, 2005, at Swain County Hospital.

Memorial services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 3, in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home with the Rev. Larry Bryson officiating.

A native of Jackson County, she was a homemaker, a Mountain Projects volunteer and a member of Promise Land Baptist Church. She enjoyed crocheting, gardening and raising farm animals. She was a daughter of the late Tommy and Avie Woodard Coggins.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Julius Robinson; two brothers, James Coggins and Thomas H. Frady; one son, Robert; one daughter, Phyllis; and one child who died in infancy.

Surviving are two sons, Roger Robinson of Tuckasegee and Kenneth Robinson of Asheville; one daughter, Shirley Tennant of Vienna, W.Va.; two sisters, Renie Ammons and Denie Jennins, both of Dillsboro; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
