Matt Hawkins pitches SM to league win over Enka
Matt Hawkins pitched a four-hitter and struck out nine while walking two as Smoky Mountain blanked Enka 3-0 Friday in a Mountain Athletic Conference baseball game at the SM field.
“We had a good win,” Coach Ron Yount said. “Matt pitched a good ball game. Most everything they hit were grounders. We had some timely hits when we needed them. It’s a good way to go into spring break.”

The Mustangs (4-4) scored the only run they would need in the second. Jared Deitz and Grant Schallock started the frame with singles, and D.J. Brooks had an RBI single.
SM made it 3-0 in the fifth. Ben Blakley and Zack West singled, and Clay Cantler had a sacrifice fly. Hawkins helped his own cause with an RBI single.
The Jets threatened in the fifth when they put the first two runners on, but Hawkins escaped the jam with three straight strikeouts.
Enka had the tying run at the plate in the seventh, but Hawkins secured the win with a strikeout.
Although no one had more than one hit, all Mustang starters reached base with either a hit or a walk.
Saturday’s game with West Henderson at Western Carolina was called off. It has tentatively been reset for 6:30 p.m. April 30.
The Mustang JVs (0-7) dropped a 4-3 decision at Enka. Michael Freeman had an RBI single, and Dylan Brooks drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.
“It was a very good game that could have gone either way,” Coach Brad Harvell said. “They struck with it and showed good signs of improvement.”
