Winners announced for annual Youth Art Month exhibit

The Annual Jackson County Youth Art Month Exhibition opened for the first time ever in Western Carolina University’s new Fine and Performing Arts Center, with more than 300 family members, teachers and friends on hand to watch young artists receive certificates of recognition Sunday, March 20.

Perry Kelly, director of the Jackson County Arts Council, presented awards to Emily Nicholson (5th grade) and Matt Dougherty (8th grade) of Cullowhee Valley Elementary; Billy Massie (6th grade) and Chelsi Corpening (7th grade) of Fairview Elementary; Linneah Taylor (4th grade) and Sarah Pangle (kindergarten) of Scotts Creek Elementary; Joey Brooks and Dusty French (6th grade) and Robinson Anderson (kindergarten) of Smokey Mountain Elementary; Bryan McManus (10th grade) and Nikki Butts (12th grade) of Smoky Mountain High School and Rebecca McKee (7th grade) and Molly Lupas (1st grade) of Summit Charter School. Selected works by the winning students will hang for one year in the Jackson County Board of Education building.

The College of Education and Allied Professions at Western also purchased three works to be display permanently in Western’s Killian Building. Students receiving a certificate and check for $25 were Bryan Panther (12th grade) of Smoky Mountain High School; Dovey Poncho (7th grade) of Smokey Mountain Elementary School; and Olivia Seay (kindergarten) of Summit Charter School. Their works will join the collection of 24 Youth Art Month exhibition pieces selected since 2000.

The exhibition is part of the nationally recognized “Youth Art Month” held each March to recognize the artistic accomplishments of U.S. students in kindergarten through 12th grade. It is sponsored by the Student Chapter of the National Art Education Association.

The art will remain on exhibit from 8:30 a.m. until 8 p.m. weekdays in the Fine and Performing Arts Center through Friday, April 1. For more information, contact Teresa Unseld of WCU’s art department at 227-3598.
