Webster officials OK purchase of town hall
By Lynn Hotaling
Webster officials voted March 17 to proceed with the purchase of a building they can use as a town hall.
According to Mayor Steve Gray, town leaders agreed to purchase the Baker building, which once housed the upholstery shop of the late Bob Baker, who was Webster’s mayor at the time of his death in 1999. Webster’s board has continued to meet in the building.
The vote was 4-0 in favor of the purchase with town board member Billie Jo Bryson abstaining, Gray said.
Webster officials agreed to pay Evelyn Baker, widow of the former mayor, $400 per month for 180 months, or $72,000 over the next 15 years, with a balloon payment for the balance of the $121,000 purchase price due at that time, Gray said, adding that the agreement could be renegotiated before the final payment is due.
“It won’t cost the taxpayers anything,” Gray said.
That’s because the building includes a second-floor apartment that is currently rented for more than the monthly payments.
In other business, Webster officials appointed Jim Myers to the post of zoning administrator. Myers served in that capacity several years ago, Gray said.
Webster’s board will hold a hearing at 6:45 p.m. Thursday, April 7, to take comment on a resolution proposed by Myers that the town pass an ordinance that would allow Webster to join a flood insurance group.
The board will next meet at 7 p.m. on April 7 in the Baker building next to the Webster Post Office.
