Volunteers needed for statewide litter sweep

Donning orange safety vests, volunteers, maintenance crews, inmates and community service workers will soon take to the roads to participate in Litter Sweep, the N.C. Department of Transportation’s biannual cleanup drive.

This year’s statewide roadside spring sweep will run April 16-30.

In addition to crews from NCDOT, the Department of Correction and the Community Service Work program, representatives from a number of other organizations will participate. These include volunteers from the Adopt-A-Highway Program, N.C. Keep America Beautiful, N.C. Big Sweep and various garden clubs and civic groups.

This year marks the 17th year Adopt-A-Highway has been in existence. Nearly 6,000 groups donate time year-round for the program.

NCDOT’s Beautification Program office will coordinate the work of both the Adopt-A-Highway groups and all other volunteers during the two-week event.

Those in Jackson County who’d like to help should contact in advance Wanda Roach at NCDOT’s Division 14 office for supplies including safety vests, gloves and orange trash bags.

NCDOT will deploy crews to collect trash bags left by the volunteers.

Roach may be reached at 586-6019.
