Travis Brotherton wins three events in track meet at North Henderson

Smoky Mountain’s women’s track squad tied for second among six teams while the men were fifth out of seven teams in a meet last Thursday at North Henderson.

Travis Brotherton dominated distance events by winning three races for the Mustangs. Victoria Palmer was the lone individual winner for the SM women.

The Mustang men compiled 77 points. Although scores for other teams were not available, Coach Jamie Extine said the order of finish was Brevard, West Henderson, Hendersonville, North Henderson, SM, Polk and East Henderson.

“We did real well,” Extine said. “I felt like we were a second or third place team. Two teams beat us by four or five points.”

He noted the 3,200-meter relay squad was disqualified when the baton was dropped on the last exchange. SM was in second place at that point.

“I feel good about the way we’re competing,” Coach Tom Westbrook said. “Those were six pretty good teams we ran against.”
