LOOK FOR A NEW FEATURE next week. Herald reporter Derek Hodges will launch a weekly column that will spotlight a county resident. Based on the idea that “everybody’s got a story to tell,” Hodges’ column will share tales of Jackson County life as the newspaper starts its 80th year.

ERIC AND BRYNN THROGMORTON sent us a note saying how glad they are to have their bloodhounds back home and how much they appreciate all those who helped them find their dogs. “Everything is peaceful on our mountain again,” Brynn said. “Our appreciation goes out to everyone in Savannah community. We would like to thank people on Mayflower Lane, Cabe Road, Greens Creek and also to Top Cat’s, High Country Tire, the animal shelters in Sylva and Bryson City, ARF, and the Savannah Fire Department. We want to send a special ‘thank you’ to the residents of Bettys Creek.”

ANOTHER NOTE came to us from 23-year-old Brandon Cerrito, who is searching for his biological parents. His biological father, Gregory Kent Hughes, is originally from Sylva, and Cerrito thinks he might still be here. Anyone with information may contact Cerrito at rockyscamaro@hotmail.com.

FIRST CITIZENS BANK associates in Sylva made rounds on Wednesday, March 30, to honor Jackson County physicians by hand-delivering tins of cookies to local doctors’ offices in honor of National Doctors Day. “First Citizens Bank is proud to show our appreciation to local physicians who do so much for our community,” said Area Executive Kevin Wells. “The food we’re delivering is just a small token of thanks for the work they do every day.” In 1991, the president issued an executive order that designated March 30 as National Doctors Day.

APPALACHIAN HIGHLANDS SCIENCE LEARNING CENTER at Purchase Knob is now recruiting high-school students for its summer internship program. The internships are paid, part-time federal positions that last for seven weeks, from June through July. Interns will be stationed at either the Appalachian Highlands Science Learning Center in Haywood County or Oconaluftee Visitor Center near Cherokee. A total of 12 positions are available. Each intern will be assigned a project that will entail data collection and field research. To apply, students must be 16 years of age by May 29, be currently enrolled in a North Carolina high school, and either be continuing high school in the fall or have been accepted at a college or university. All applications must be postmarked by April 2. For more information, see www.nps.gov/grsm/pksite/internships.htm or call Paul Super at (828) 926-6251.

TWO AREA AUTHORS will be on hand at City Lights Bookstore in downtown Sylva for readings this weekend. Barkers Creek resident Gail Nolen will present her new book “Memories of Merritt Island: Birthplace of the Kennedy Space Center” on Friday, April 1, at 7 p.m. Nolen is a Florida native who grew up on Merritt Island. In the 1960s, NASA appropriated a large tract that had been in her family for generations, and launch pads now rest on what was once family land. In her book, which was designed and published locally by Ammons Communications, Nolen collects photographs and family stories about the island that had been home to her family since the late 19th century. Asheville novelist Tommy Hays, whose appearance at the store on March 11 was snowed out, will read from his new novel, “The Pleasure Was Mine,” on Saturday, April 2, at 7 p.m. For more information about either event, call City Lights at 586-9499.

ARE YOU COMPETING for a spot in one of Southwestern Community College’s Health Sciences programs? If so, plan to attend an information session on Monday, April 4, at 4:30 p.m. in the Balsam Center Auditorium on SCC’s Jackson campus. Representatives from the Health Sciences Division and Enrollment Services will provide information on improving chances for admission into the programs.
