Strausbaugh’s double lifts Cats past UNC-A

A solo home run by Nate Hall and a walk-off, two-run double by Steven Strausbaugh in the bottom of the ninth propelled Western Carolina to a 7-6 victory over UNC-Asheville on March 24 at Childress Field/Hennon Stadium.

WCU trailed 6-5 before Hall’s homer started the ninth. Two walks and an error loaded the bases setting up Strausbaugh’s game-winning hit.

Brian McCullen (3-1) pitched a scoreless ninth for the win, Alan DeRatt took the loss.

Strausbaugh, Hall, Barrett Shaft and Jonathan Greene all had two hits for the Catamounts.

Josh Coyle paced the Bulldogs by going three of three, and Elliott Arrington added two hits.

Coyle opened the scoring with a homer in the second, but Western tied it in the bottom of the frame on Hall’s sacrifice fly.

UNC-A went up 4-1 in the fourth. Arrington and Alan DeRatt had RBI singles, and John Whited drove in a run with a safety squeeze.

The Bulldogs extended the margin to 6-1 in the sixth as Arrington doubled in a run and Whited followed with an RBI single.

WCU cut the gap to 6-4 in the bottom of the sixth on Greene’s three-run homer.
