One-way Monday
Sylva Public Works Director Dan Schaeffer, left, and Public Works employee Justin Jamison give passers-by a peek at one of the new one-way signs to be unveiled on Landis Street this Monday, April 4. Sylva leaders voted in February to make Landis one-way from Jackson to Main streets – the stretch that runs between the post office and First Baptist Church. Angled parking spots will also be added on both sides of the street. The change comes following a request from the postmaster, who said a one-way traffic pattern would reduce the chance of accidents for postal customers. Church trustees disagreed, saying the angled parking would make it difficult for handicapped passengers to unload, but the town’s street committee decided in March to proceed. Angled parking on the sloped street should make it easier for those with physical difficulties to open and close vehicle doors, said Police Chief Jeff Jamison. – Herald photo by Carey King |
