Marvin Smith
Marvin B. Smith, 76, of Hendersonville, died Wednesday, March 23, 2005, at Pardee Memorial Hospital.
Born in Cullowhee, he graduated from Cullowhee High School, and received a BS degree and an Educational Specialist degree in Public School Administration from Western Carolina University. He served a brief time in the Merchant Marines and was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in the Korean War. His educational work experience included serving as a teacher in Danville, Va., and Hendersonville High School, Director of Instruction, and Director of Secondary Education for Hendersonville City Schools. He served as the NC Chairman of Federal Program, Title III Advisory Board, and as NC Chairman of Block Grants. In 1987, he retired from the NC Department of Education as Director of the Western Regional Education Center. He and his son, Tommy, are Christmas tree growers in Jackson County. He served four terms on the NC Christmas Tree Association Board and two terms as president of the association. He was also a member of the National Christmas Tree Association and the American Legion. He was a member of Hendersonville First Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, former chairman of trustees and chairman of the Family Life Center Building Committee. He was a son of the late Carl M. Smith and Mae Galloway Smith.
Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Peggy Hooper Smith of Hendersonville; one son, Tommy of Brevard; one daughter, Rhonda of Birmingham, Al.; one sister, Thelma Bryson; and one brother, Carl James “Jimmy” Smith of Hendersonville; and one granddaughter.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, March 25, at First Baptist Church of Hendersonville with Dr. Gordon Elliott and Dr. George Jones officiating. Burial was in Big Ridge Baptist Church Cemetery in Glenville.

Richard Wood
Richard “Richey” Dell Wood, 39, of Mason St., Dillsboro, died unexpectedly Monday, March 21, 2005, at Harris Regional Hospital.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, March 25, at Jarrett Memorial Baptist Church, of which he was a member, with the Rev. Avery Brown officiating. Burial was in Parris Cemetery.
He was a native of Jackson County and a brick mason who enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Surviving are his father, Billie Wood of Sylva; mother, Margaret Mason Wood of Dillsboro; one son, William Wood of Youngstown, Ohio; one daughter, Tammy Wood of Youngstown; and two brothers, David Mason of Asheville and Gary Wood of Sylva.

Bob Tice
John Robert “Bob” Tice, 69, of Wishing Stone Lane, Sylva, died Monday, March 28, 2005, at his residence after a period of declining health.
Memorial services will be held at 6 p.m. Friday, April 1, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home. The family will receive friends following the service until 8 p.m.
He was a native of Ann Arbor, Mich., and had lived in Jackson County since 1996. He was a parts manager and rented cabins for Carolina Mountain Cabins. He was a U.S. Army veteran, attended St. Mary’s Catholic Church and enjoyed golf. He was a son of the late John LeRoy and Mary Howley Tice.
Surviving are his wife of 49 years, Sally Jean Marten Tice; one daughter, Deborah Lynn Pullen of Florida; one son, John Michael Tice of Michigan; one brother, Richard George “Dick” Tice of Michigan; and two grandchildren.

Alex Rogers
Alex Ray Rogers, 63, of Grayson, Ky., died Wednesday, March 16, 2005, at his home.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 19, in the chapel of Malone Funeral Home in Grayson with the Revs. David McGranahan and Kenny Floyd officiating. Military rites were performed by Grayson, Ky. VFW Post #3705.
He was born May 5, 1941, in Jackson County and was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served two tours in Vietnam. He was a power lineman for Pike Electric, a life member and past commander of VFW Post #3705, and a member of the American Legion #345 in Willard, Ky. He was a son of Mary Catherine Buchanan Rogers of Cashiers and the late Virgle Rogers.
He was also preceded in death by one brother, Carl O. Rogers.
Surviving, in addition to his mother, are his wife, Ernestine Cooper Rogers of Grayson; three sons, Virgil R. Rogers of Coon Rapids, Minn., Michael A. Rogers of Grayson and Alex R. Rogers Jr. of West Liberty, Ky.; one sister, Sally Ruth Rogers Clawson of Cashiers; one brother, William Lee Rogers of Glenville; and five grandchildren.

Mildred Shuler
Mildred Robinson Shuler, 82, of Windcrest Ridge, Sylva, died Friday, March 25, 2005, at Harris Regional Hospital after a period of declining health.
Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 28, in Fairview Memorial Gardens with the Revs. Charles Stevens and Charles Dean officiating.
She was a native of Auxier, Ky., and had lived in Jackson County for more than 20 years. She had worked at Skyland Textile. She was a daughter of the late Thomas Robinson and Inis McKenzie Robinson Little.
Surviving are her husband of 60 years, Everett “Bill” Shuler; one daughter, Olivia Holloman of Chesterfield, Va.; two sons, Wayne Shuler of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Jerry Shuler of Rock Hill, S.C.; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Charles Fox
Charles G. Fox, 85, of N. Norton Rd, Cullowhee, died Saturday, March 26, 2005, at Fidelia Eckerd Living Center, Highlands, after a period of declining health.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 29, at Yellow Mountain Baptist Church, of which he was a member, with the Revs. Keith Ashe, Johnny Norris and Eddie Stillwell officiating. Burial was in Evitt Cemetery. Military rites were conducted by the Jimmy Dillard VFW Post No. 10685.
Pallbearers were James Stiwinter, T.W. Stiwinter, J.R. Stiwinter, Eldon Jamison, Jeff Stewart and Bill Fox.
A native of Shelby, he had lived in Jackson County most of his life. He retired as a landscaper for Palmer Landscaping and was an Army veteran serving in World War II in Europe and the Pacific, mason and member of Jimmy Dillard VFW Post No. 10685 and a son of the late Thomas and Lola Weathers Fox.
He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Marvin and James; and two sisters, Ruby and Bay.
Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Alice Buchanan Fox; two daughters, Donna Sue Fox and Debra A. Robert, both of Kissimmee, Fla.; four sons, C. Wayne Fox and Jeffery L. Fox, both of Franklin, Walter E. Fox of Tuckasegee and Tom W. Fox of Glenville; four sisters, Lois Jones of Maryland, Faye Dickens and Dorris Redden, both of Florida, and Louise Huege of Oregon; and one brother, J.B. Fox of Florida.

Melba Henderson
Melba England Henderson, 81, of Dana, died Tuesday, March 22, 2005, at Pardee Memorial Hospital after a brief illness.
Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 26, at Thomas Cemetery in Whittier with Dr. Luther Anderson and the Rev. Mike Dillinger officiating.
A native of Bryson City, she spent most of her life in Houston, Pa., lived in Whittier for a time and moved to Henderson County six years ago. She was a homemaker and attended Shoal Creek Baptist Church. She was a daughter of the late George and Susan Mae Randolph England.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Merl Henderson, who died in 1991.
Surviving are two sons, Ronald Henderson of Canonsburg, Pa., and Curtis Henderson of Dana; three sisters, Loris Edmonds of Whittier, Neva Black of Carmi, Ill., and Nezzie Myrgo of Canonsburg; one brother, Dennis England of Pontiac, Mich.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Sadie Henry
Sadie Jane Henry, 94, of Sylva, died unexpectedly Sunday, March 27, 2005, at Harris Regional Hospital.
Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 29, at Cogdill-Henry Cemetery with Dr. Jack Robinson officiating.
Pallbearers were Jeff Fisher, Jamie Dellinger, Chas Mathis, Derick Dellinger, Ellith McFalls and Mark Phillips.
A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she was a member of Buff Creek Baptist Church. She was the last of nine children of the late Dock and Alma Cogdill Henry.
Surviving are several nieces and nephews.

Gerald Barnes
Gerald Robert Barnes, 76, of Sylva’s Ochre Hill community, died unexpectedly Tuesday, March 22, 2005, at Harris Regional Hospital.
No services are planned.
A native of Pennsylvania, he had lived in Jackson County for the past 20 years and was a retired civil service worker and firefighter/paramedic. He was a U.S. Army veteran.
Surviving are his wife of 28 years, Sue Dillard Barnes; mother, Arlene Greenfield Barnes of Pennsylvania; one daughter, Vivian Strickland of Fayetteville; Kevin Barnes of Fayetteville; one stepdaughter, Mary Johnson of High Point; two stepsons, Tim Queen of Shelby and Kirby Queen of Sylva; two sisters, Doris Bechtel and June Sowry, both of Conneautville, Pa.; and one granddaughter.
