Funds are sought for Streater scholarship

Friends of the late Jimmy Streater are sponsoring a fund-raising drive to create a scholarship in honor of the man many consider to be the best athlete ever produced in Jackson County.

Streater died last year after a long battle with diabetes and other ailments, including a stroke.

“This was something I thought of that would honor him and it would be something the Streater family would be proud of,” said Freda Smith, who befriended Streater during his stay at a Canton health care facility.

Streater excelled in football, basketball, baseball, and track at Sylva-Webster High School, where he graduated in 1976. He earned All-American honors in football and accepted a scholarship to Tennessee, where he became an All-Southeastern Conference quarterback.

The scholarship winner will be a Smoky Mountain High School senior who participates in one of the four sports Streater played and who has at least a 3.0 grade-point average.

The scholarship will be presented at the Jackson County Athletic Hall of Fame Banquet set for 5 p.m. Sunday, April 24, at The Jarrett House.

Donations may be mailed to Sylva Insurance Agency, 470 W. Main St., Sylva, N.C. 28779. Checks should be made payable to Jackson County Athletic Hall of Fame and designated for the Jimmy Streater Scholarship.

Tickets for the banquet are $15 and are available at Sylva Insurance Agency.
