SCC to celebrate 40 years this Saturday - Southwestern Community College will mark its 40th anniversary this Saturday, April 2, with a daylong celebration, and everyone is invited to the Sylva campus to join the fun. It’s that time again - Get ready to lose an hour of sleep as daylight-saving time returns this weekend. The official time to “spring forward” is 2 a.m. Sunday, April 3. However, it is suggested that clocks and watches be set forward an hour before going to bed Saturday night in order to be on time Sunday morning. Daylight-saving time continues until 2 a.m. the last Sunday in October. The N.C. Department of Insurance suggests using the time change as an opportunity to change batteries in smoke detectors.

Volunteers needed for April 16 river cleanup - For more than 20 years, volunteers from Western Carolina University and the surrounding community have come together once a year to clean up one of Jackson County’s natural treasures – the Tuckaseigee River. This year, there is a much greater amount of trash and debris in the river than usual because of flooding from hurricanes Ivan and Frances last fall, according to cleanup organizers.
