Food drive to benefit Baptist Children’s Homes

By Derek Hodges

Since 1885, children’s homes across the state affiliated with the Baptist State Convention have been helping children and families who are going through hard times.

Now folks from across the state have the chance to help the 12 regional facilities run by the Baptist Children’s Homes better serve those in need.

Throughout the month of April, Baptist associations across the state, including the Tuckaseigee Baptist Association that serves Jackson County, will be collecting needed items for BCH.

In Jackson and Macon counties, the third-annual collection is being made this year in memory of William Drinnon.

Drinnon, the son of Tony and Tammy Drinnon of Franklin, died Dec. 31, 2004, of a viral infection.

Tammy Drinnon said Lewis Smith, who had served as pastor at the Drinnons’ church and is currently the BCH’s director of development for the western region, approached her about conducting the collection in her son’s name.

“William was kind of a well-known child in this area, and Brother Lewis said the Lord just put it on his heart to do the food drive in his memory,” said Tammy Drinnon.

William would have turned 2 on April 25, so it seemed appropriate to Smith and the Drinnons that the statewide drive, now in its third year, was being held from the beginning of April until Monday, April 18.

“If people can help other children it would be something positive for us to look forward to, instead of thinking of our loss. William’s death might help other children that way, Tammy Drinnon said.

The drive includes basic food items for main courses or side dishes, condiments, drinks and drink mixes, desserts and snack foods. Also included are cleaning supplies, zipper-top food bags and toiletries. Monetary donations and donations of Food Lion gift cards may also be made.

Donations may be dropped off at participating local Baptist churches or the Tuckaseigee Baptist Association building in Lovesfield. The association is encouraging everyone, no matter what denomination or religion, to donate to the program.

For more information on needed supplies, call the Baptist association office at 586-6011.
