Cullowhee mobile home fire injures two

By Carey Phillips

Two people were injured in a fire Wednesday morning (March 23) at River View Mobile Home Park (formerly Park Place) in Cullowhee.

Orlando Cantillano was taken to Bowman Gray Medical Center in Winston-Salem for treatment of facial burns and has since been released, according to Lt. Kim Hooper of the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office.

Miguel Moreno, who sustained minor burns, was treated and released at Harris Regional Hospital, Hooper said.

Five Hispanic males lived in the mobile home, which was rented by Ivan Rivera-Rivas, Hooper said.

The Cullowhee Fire Department responded to the call around 10 a.m. The structure was destroyed, and the cause is unknown, according to William Frady. Cullowhee’s assistant chief.

“When we arrived on the scene, it was fully involved,” Frady said. “Due to the intensity of the heat, there was some damage to the trailer next to it, but we got there in time to keep it from spreading.”

There was initially concern that one or more of the occupants was still in the structure, but they were all accounted for, according to Sheriff Jimmy Ashe.

Fire departments from Sylva and Savannah provided mutual aide.
